Looks like external power lines have reached the nuclear power plant... Hopefully they'll be able restart the coolant pumps soon so this whole nuclear media mess can go away soon and people can start focusing on the real humanitarian crisis

That's for the media, they need to make it look like they are doing something. If power was really the issue, portable generators would have done just fine.

Except from what I have read, the portable generators they did bring in could only be hooked up through an area that was flooded, or could not be hooked up at all.

I tend to agree with giver99, when you look at the smoking pile of rubble that are what's left of the reactor buildings one has to wonder why in the hell anyone would think that anything in there, least of all the water pumps would work.

They are already starting to talk sarcophogus ala Chernobyl.

I was responding to his "if power was an issue" comment in relation to generators. With power back, they may be able to get the heat back under control. Of course the possibility of burying the reactors exist; that option opened up the instant the pumps went down and seawater had to be introduced.

The rubble itself is, I believe, just from the building on top of the reactor. Nothing I have read to this point indicates Chernobyl levels of destruction to the primary containment casings.

Chernobyl didn't have containment to begin with and when mixed with an unauthorized experiment and a major graphite fire you get what happened. This is a completely different design and likely a completely different outcome....even in a worst case scenario.

About a sarcophagus...That was always the likely end game no matter what and will likely be the end game even in the best case scenario right now. What they have is high level waste and whether you put that in a bunch 55 gallon drum sarcophagi to bury under ground or bury it on site in one large one it is still a sarcophagus.

I don't understand why this is a big deal. Seriously, in any video game i've ever played, all you have to do is make sure you don't land in the radiation. As long as you jump over it, it's not a problem.

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency raised the level for the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant Friday from a 4 to 5 -- putting it on par with the 1979 incident at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island.

According to the International Nuclear Events Scale, a level 5 equates to the likelihood of a release of radioactive material, several deaths from radiation and severe damage to a reactor core.

Should people be stocking up on RadAway or Rad-X?

The design of the GE Mark 1 reactors may not be as robust as some have led on. Regardless, now that we are talking complete entombment of possibly up to six reactors plus ground-soil clean-up and possibly the creation of a permanent no-go zone, the costs of this disaster are going to be absolutely massive. Added on top of the other tsunami related destruction, it's looking to be a very hard, long road ahead for Japan.

All I know is that when I was getting they were showing pictures showing one of the reactors was exposed through a massive hole in the wall.

Don't get me wrong...the cost is going to be large. No doubt. But as it stands it is likely a cost that is limited to the site with minimal public impact. Everyone of course hopes it won't get worse but there are numerous reasons to believe that this will not have a huge effect on the general population (unlike an oil spill for example).

Sometimes you can also run really fast. You might take a temporary hit to your health meter, but a quick rest and you're good to go.

If you're talking about the building surrounding the reactor, then that doesn't even matter at this point. The building surrounding the reactor is just a shell with no real protective qualities. If you mean the concrete surrounding the reactor core though...

I'm talking the green painted reactor, not concrete exposed, but the machinery itself.

That's not the reactor, that's the cooling pond for spent fuel rods.

EDIT: And please get information from somewhere other than the Daily Mail, they're one step short of Infowars.
