Hopefully the UN can muster up the forces necessary sooner rather than later. That way they can stop Gaddhafi's forces from steamrolling the rebels.
Wonder how much experience these rebels have operating those captured tanks/aircraft and what not.

Likely just as much (or as little) experience as the regime has operating theirs, what with the massive amounts of defections that have been ongoing. 8,000 men, including 3,000 special forces, have been reported to have defected just recently, for instance.
Libya's military is not exactly a crack force -- think lots of conscripts and mercs from the south of the country. Then, the real "cream of the crop" is the three brigades commanded by Ghaddafi's sons, but even they are thought to be suffering from discipline issues. "Khamis Brigade" is said to be Libya's elite unit, but the "eliteness" of these forces is, of course, questionable.

I was reading an argument that Harper would likely commit CF-18's which would bolster the idea that Canada needs and justifies the F-35 program.
If he does send aircraft, it is a smart move.
Also, it says in the link:
Quote:
A source told the Ottawa Citizen Thursday night that six CF-18s originally tasked for a NATO patrol off Iceland have now been ordered to take part in the Libyan mission.

As a Canadian I don't support sending military force to Libya. This hooks Canada in to more pointless conflict that costs big bucks.
We can't be spending tax payer money on all these pissing matches in the middle east. If we have to borrow tons of money for all this, that adds to our national debt, which in turn increases the service burden (interest) to that debt.
It seems to me that Libya is more evenly split than in Egypt. Let them solve their own problems.

Oh yeah, by the way, I wonder how Bahrain feels right about now. Everyone is ignoring them , including the UN, while Saudis and the Bahranian Police shoot protesters. They are screaming for help, but no one is listening.

When was the last time CF-18s took part in combat operations? Gulf War 1? Kosovo?

Blow back. The US and allies armed the Afghanistan resistance fighters when the Soviets invaded during the Cold War. It was a good idea at the time, until the Taliban took over and threatened to use the weapons against the West

Hey Crunch, what kind of air to air arms does the CF-18s use?
Americans have their AAMRAM's (sp?) and lastest version of the sidewinders. Do the Canadians use the same thing?

Problem with that conflict was the US cut and run after they fought the west's proxy war against the soviets.

Depends on the mission requirements
For air to air, its the Aim-7 sparrows, the Aamram and the Aim-9 sidewinders
For air to ground they can mount Mavericks, Paveways or any manner of guided and unguided bombs.

Heard the Italians are sending their carrier Garibaldi into the area, it left Taranto and is on the way.

And thats why the ROE of everything except boots on the ground is going to have to change.
I would expect that at some point there's going to have to be a peace enforcement (not peace keeping) force put on the ground there.
