Just curious, extending to the OP's question, how much of your vacation time do you use for pleasure vs. seeing family?

It's basically first come, first serve here too. And I believe if you haven't used your vacation time in two years, you are told to take holidays or maybe lose the time? Not positive on what happens if you leave it too long.

I'm in accounting, so we try to schedule everyone to not have vacations around period / quarter / year ends. It's not set in stone, and there are exceptions. We just need to plan it out with our manager.

I'm in application support, so I just need to make sure that none of the people supporting the same set of apps are on vacation at the same time, for the rest things are quite flexible. If I want to take a longer vacation (e.g. 4 weeks), I would need to notify the team (and the boss) way in advance, but that is really not a big deal...

My guys get first come first serve. I don't really like them taking time off from Jan 1 to Apr 1, but I'll give them a week or two begrudgingly if they ask for it.
They can take as much outside of that period, though, as long as they don't go over their allotment.

I take at least a full weeks vacation every month, and normally only work 4 days a week. Ill take 10-15 days every 2-3 months as well.

I can take it whenever we have coverage. As low man on the totem pole, the very few times we have overlap, I have a bit less chance of getting it.
Since I am in school, I take my vacation to give me exam studying time or time to do assignments. Often in 1-2 day blocks with little notice.

Thanks everyone. Looks like it's just as I suspected, my employer is overly anal compared to the norm.

Good deal. What do you do that gives you that much flexibility?

I am a post-doc. What are these holidays that you speak of?
My lab has a window. Does that count?

Before I had kids...all vacations were for pleasure. I'd work a couple Saturdays in trade for other days off to go visit family type of thing. Now that I have a kid, all vacation will be used to visit family. Two reasons, I'm a dirt poor draftsman and family gives me free room and board. Reason two, my Mom and mother inlaw adore my son so much that I think they'd write me out of their wills if I didn't bring him to see them during my time off.
As for time off...15 years experience...but I get two weeks because I had to start a new job last July. After 3 years I'll get 3 weeks. I deserve a mule kick in the head though if I'm still doing my job in 3 years.

5 Weeks/year that I can take basically any amount any time I want, but I have to submit a request no less than 2 weeks in advance or it's no dice.

In every job I had we could schedule pretty much anytime we wanted and break it up however we wanted, as long as it didn't overlap too much with others (leaving the place deserted) and that there was time to get whatever needed to be done done.
I think the best I ever had it though was when I was an onsite contractor for an Oil and Gas company. They had Friday afternoons off during the summer, and strictly speaking I was supposed to go into the office on those days but we never did and our boss never cared. They also had Monday's off every so often in the summer (every 2 weeks I think, or once a month maybe).
So I'd schedule half day and full day vacations all over the place in combination with stat holidays and stuff, I was able to stretch my 3 weeks to almost six.
Now I'm a contractor. Vacation = unemployed.

Right now 3 weeks that can be taken whenever I want as long as there are no more than 2 people already booked off for that time. Before March 15th all vacations are based on senority and after March 15 its on a first come first serve basis.
