I thought I was smart
I thought I was right
I thought it better not to fight
I thought there was a virtue, in always being cool
So it came time to fight
I thought "I'll just step aside"
And that the time would prove you wrong
And that you would be the fool
I don't know where the sunbeams end
And the starlight begins
It's all a mystery
Oh. To fight is to defend
If it's not now then tell me when
Would be the time
That you would stand up and be a man
For to lose I could accept
But to surrender I just wept
And regretted this moment
oh that
I was the fool
I don't know where the sunbeams end
And the starlight begins
It's all a mystery
And I don't know how a man decides
What's right for his own life
It's all a mystery
'Cause I'm a man, not a boy
And there are things you can't avoid
You have to face them
When you're not prepared to face them
If I could I would
But you're with him, now it'd do no good
I should've fought him
But instead I let him
I let him take it

This is a good article from the NY Times from a few weeks back. It's a pretty interesting read on bullying.
Web of Popularity, Achieved by Bullying
Quote:
The latest findings, being published this month in The American Sociological Review, offer a fascinating glimpse into the social stratification of teenagers. The new study, along with related research from the University of California, Davis, also challenges the stereotypes of both high school bully and victim.
Highly publicized cases of bullying typically involve chronic harassment of socially isolated students, but the latest studies suggest that various forms of teenage aggression and victimization occur throughout the social ranks as students jockey to improve their status.
The findings contradict the notion of the school bully as maladjusted or aggressive by nature. Instead, the authors argue that when it comes to mean behavior, the role of individual traits is “overstated,” and much of it comes down to concern about status.

^ Is that a surprise to anyone? Hell, we do it here all the time. Everyone tries for the one liner, the zinger or the gif to insult someone and get as many "Thanks" as we can. I do it all the time. I bet a lot of the people here that cry about being bullied when they were younger, use the "Thanks" to bully others as well.

What a loser. Am I right, guys? Thank this post to show that you agree with me.

Did you read the article? The interesting parts are in the details of how it breaks down.

There's definitely posters in this thread that don't understand the dynamics of bullying. Like many other posters, I support Casey.
SK got what he deserved...but he is not the only perpetrator of bullying in the video. What about the big kid that (although poorly) has SK's back? What about the d-bag narrator and videographer? Heck, even the two girls that are standing idly by, watching what is going on, are to some extent guilty of bullying...imho.
That's the thing about bullying, there is rarely just one bully...there are also those that back-up the bully...or at the very least, provide an audience for the bullying.
Here's how I would address this problem if I were the principal of the school (yeah, I know it wouldn't work in real life):
1. Casey should get an apology from the school and SK & pals. Casey should also get free counseling to address his past victimization. He should also get an "atta boy" for finally standing up for himself, when apparently no one else would.
2. SK should also get counseling but his parents should have to pay for it. He should also get suspended for the rest of the school year, and be forced to make up his school credits in summer school. A public paddling should be administered in front the whole student body...and posted on the internet.
3. SK's bully buddy (the big kid at the end of the video) should get the same treatment as SK.
4. Videographer kid should get the same treatment as SK and his camera should be busted...this should also be posted on the internet.
5. The two looky-lou girls should also be paddled in front of the student body...not so fun when it's you on display.
6. The older girl at the end, that stopped SK's buddy, should automatically be promoted to student body president and receive a "Humanitarian Award".
7. Casey's parents should get bumper stickers for their cars that read "My kid kicked a bully's arse at such and such school"
8. The other kid's parents should have to put bumper stickers on their cars that say "My kid is a bully at such and such school"
9. The principal needs to get teachers or other staff....most importantly, his own fat-arse outside and monitoring student movement before and after school...and in between classes. School, should at the very least, be the one place that students are safe from physical and emotional harm. Shame on the school.

Just the same as individuals having the constant need to try and present themselves as internet super dooper sportsmen in debates to try and boost their cyber ego and further their argument.
Whilst they feel it might improve their status as perceived by the rest of the group it in fact has the opposite result due to reeking of insecurity and low self esteem.
Just my interpretation and how I see things ...........

In addition, I don't mean to shame just the school...the parents should all be shamed as well...(including Casey's parents to some extent).
And I agree with other posters, Casey really missed out on a once in a life time opportunity for a witty comeback such as "How do you like them apples, twinkle-toes" or "Hey, SK, the Jerk Store called...they're all out of you" or perhaps even a simple "I slept with your wife". But hey, all the good come-backs are usually thought of after the fact.

I'm guessing you are probably targeting this at me? (otherwise I have no idea what you are trying to talk about)
I don't really care... already said that, pointed out 2 interesting observations (ones you, funny enough, seem to get pissy about), seems like someone else is getting on their soap box, and not me. Being on here for over a decade, yeah there is internet bullying. There was the Gordo board Jihad, Jordon, flip, recently the thread system getting taken down cause alltherage's threads were one-star'ed (I one-starred them)... yeah I'm sure some have low self-esteem and some pile on, Dion gets piled on a lot here a lot.
I never got bullied or vis versa, as a kid, high school or anything. I thought the youtube was pretty sick, didn't think much of it, checked back here a day later and made a observation, saw a lot of people got pissy (including you) and let it be and didn't care about it enough to bother... saw Jonny's link, and I was intrigued, social dynamics is something that always interested me (especially observing CP evolve the past few years) and made a comment, seems you want to continue and be pissy about what I said before.

Once the rabble catch on to an ongoing joke, it never gets dropped. chris_lindberg had to put up with the same one-liner for about a year.
Forums are probably fascinating to sociologists.
Once it has been determined that a person/entity deserves ridicule, the flood gates are open. This Rebecca/Friday girl is a great example. She is a vapid selfish tween, her parents are greedy, and they all wanted fame. So she deserves some vitriol, and in an echo chamber like CP, any level of vitriol can be justified.
Just humanity I suppose, oblivious to 'bullying' in most areas of life unless victimized by it.

LOL! Insecure much.
I made one comment on the thread about the life lesson handed out, hardly constitutes being pissy.
I ... then ... made another reply to your post about cyber bullying and esteem (which IMO are related) regarding how (again IMO) some posters seek the internet to blow themselves up into prideful baboons and boost their low self esteem just as bullys (IMO) often bully due to low self esteem and the need to feel acceptance. Not a huge difference IMO.
Just my non-scientific observations (i.e opinion).
In case you missed it. If you didn't mean me, my bad, you seemed to be so articulate on your soap box that I was wondering wtf you were trying to say, and wondered if you were pissed at me. (I still have no idea what you are trying to say, probably also too lazy to read all the bracketed crap too.)
Internet bullying is very evident, there are lots of papers done on that as well and a very hot topic in sociology. I guess burn_in_city didn't know that (or you, since you thanked that post?)

You're struggling ..... the jist of burn_in_city's post in a tongue in cheek way was don't take the forum so seriously.
As for the soap box ... lol. My point is simple. Whenever I read someone rant on the internet about how sooper dooper they are and try and put themselves on a pedestal mid debate the first thing that comes into my head is the poor fella is pining for acceptance and security. Reeks of desperation.
Again just my interpretation based on experience ........
The brackets were just to empasise that it was all my opinion, nothing complex.
