Is it the guide software or the technology (MOCA) that allows networked PVR's?

Both. The current Moto boxes and I-Guide could do it if Shaw wanted to (among other things).

This is interesting because the rumour was that Shaw going to Moxi's (http://www.moxi.com/us/moxi_dvr.html) assumed that it was the Moxi branded hardware. But now realize that the Moxi software also runs on Motorola boxes, this will make the transition easier.

Well, the Moxi hardware, from what I've read there, requires a cable card so those wouldn't work in Canada anyway, without major adjustments.

So going with the existing HD is the way to go for Shaw if they can get the software to run on it, not to mention from a logistics and cost stand point, going with all new HD in order to be able to use the new software would cost a fortune and be a nightmare for them and existing clients.

That's their consumer retail line. Moxi has other solutions for Cable Companies. http://www.arrisi.com/solutions/cable/index.asp

Thanks to all for their insights. I found this http://www.shaw.ca/uploadedFiles/Sup...User_Guide.pdf on the shaw website; it mentions MoCA however it makes statements like "if enabled".

I will be holding off until we get the MoCA announcement from Shaw.

the funny thing about MoCA is that it doesn't appear to beat the Optik platform, more like an equivalent. It will likely be a big deal for existing customers...but Shaw better be sure about the hardware that they are asking people to invest in.

If my signal isn't fixed soon, you may see a video of me driving over my PVR...

For the past month it has been digitizing like crazy, not to mention the modem flapping. I have friends that work for Shaw and they are trying to help me out.

If I could get a definitive answer as to whether Optik is available in my area I will be switching.

Well Shaw had not better expect me to buy new hardware or "rent" it because I shelled out some big bucks for this HDPVR and HD Box I have now.

If that's what it takes to get a new interface that is already close to what Telus Optik has, well, bye bye Shaw.

I forgot to mention I was chatting with my shaw tech rep and he said shaw just got a new pvr box to start testing from the people who make their phone modems forget the name. He says they are incredibly glitchy right now but should offer a great product with awesome hardware once everything gets smoothed out. Also said that Optik like services are still over a year away

Take it for what its worth I am not stating these as facts just what my talk happy tech told me

This further supports the rumours that the system Shaw is testing and planning to roll out is the Arris Media Gateway. Arris is the supplier of the touchstone modem for Shaw Phone.

the video was pretty good...except she kept saying "right" for everything.

i like the dlna focus, i like the ability to bring OTT content in through this device, i like the ability to see the network including NAS devices, and i like the ability to have multiple end points.

now, whether any of this survives the testing, finance and marketing departments at shaw remains to be seen.

ya arris! that sounds about right to what he said!

He also told me the reason why everything is going so slow is because of the remaining analog channels. Each analog channel takes up about 25 mb worth of space in the cable crippling their infrastructure

It is currently being beta tested with Shaw employees in Calgary and Vancouver. They are talking about an early May rollout. basically just over a month away.
