One time during stampede I tried to get into cowboys with a bunch of cute girls from my out of province university and the bouncers turned us away citing a no facial piercing policy. So stupid. Not sure I ever went there again.
Not really a big fan of dance bars that always play country. Can't really stand that music. That said, makes sense that cowboys would return in some incarnation.
Cowboys didn't always play country, they would rotate some country in to the mix every now and then, but not enough to make a country hating person want to leave. Plus if you could at least 2 step a little you could easily get some game going with someone.
Say what you like, I'm not a fistpumper myself, but this will probably make a lot of money.
Nothing bad to say about Vickers because I don't really know him. I think he gets a bad rep because basically pretty much any flamboyant business owner (especially someone in the entertainment and nightclub business) connotates a bad image in people's minds. I think it takes a personna like him to do well in his industry.
I dated a girl that worked for penny lane in a managerial role, trust me, the guy earns his reputation and then some. His businesses haven't seen a nickel from me in close to 5 years as a result.
Was Cowboys one of the places that was accused of having racist admission policies? They better not try to keep Asian people out of the Casino, or there could be hell to pay.
Cowboys was the worst of the clubs for this. Not sure how much of that still goes on (haven't been to a Calgary club for about 5 years), but if it does you're right. They will have to adjust their Asian policy.

So many drunken nights at Cowboys growing up, it was quite the place to be after 7$ pitchers at the den. You could roll in after 3 pitchers, order up a couple trays of .25 draft and just get toasted.
Downside to this is of course the dubious life choices made. Like waking up in the morning, and realizing the girl you thought was a solid 8 the night before is really having a tough time pushing a 3, and then realizing that your friend is in the same position, and then it all comes back that you decided you had to take a grenade in order for your buddy to have a slump buster. Good times. Oh and the best part is the 3 saying that she would take care of me for a week after I got my wisdom teeth out the next day, and my response was nothing. Not a single word. Sorry sweetheart, it just wasn't meant to be.
Also remember seeing Fleury there on several occasions, and he was in fine form. Oh and the Papa Roach concert there was out of control, one of the best live concerts I've seen.
Anyone else have any other stories? If you share some, I will type up a few more that make taking a #3 grenade seem like Sunday church.

My wife and I have been residents of arriVa since we first took possession in January of 2008. The one thing we don't understand is why some of our fellow residents had such a problem with Cowboys being there considering that location was ALWAYS a bar even before ground broke on the arriVa project (Desperados, Coyotes, and then Cowboys).
In fact after enough people starting complaining about Cowboys there was actually a little get together with them, our alderman, and fellow residents to talk about what could be done. We really impressed our neighbours when we said we were there to support Cowboys, and had no problem with them operating out of that location Don't think we made too many friends that night. Our building was fine, we have 24 hour security and cameras monitoring the perimeter of the building, plus there was always a strong police presence on the weekends.
This new location in the casino will be better enclosed, farther away from us, and also closer to the transit network and won't force drunken patrons to walk by our building to get home at night.
Plus perhaps the Dogfather will come back, I always enjoyed being able to take a quick elevator ride down and grab a hot-dog loaded up with everything from him.
You don't want some extra noise and stuff around where you live go move to suburbia, this is the Beltline, deal with it.

They are the same kind of people that will get a great deal on a house near the airport and then complain about noise from airplanes.
That article from the Herald says the Stampede can pull out of the management contract whenever they want. I have a feeling Vickers will do this properly and not allow all the garbage he let go at the previous locations.
I think this is great for the city that Cowboys is coming back. Say what you want about the music or the owner, but it was a fixture in this town for a long time and that place created alot of memories for alot of people. I am not so sure about the location though. Being located in a Casino seems like a temporary move IMO.
I think this is a stepping stone prior to the Stampede Park re-development and then Vicker's will get a separate building for his venue within the new development.
The two parties are probably just using this as an opportunity to see if they can get along.

IN Vegas virtually all the nightclubs are in Casinos and that seems to work ok.

Stampede-goers dreaming of wasting away in Margaritaville may have to stick to Caesars and suds for now.
The Jimmy Buffett restaurant -touted as the marquee attraction in a major expansion slated for Stampede grounds -is facing new hurdles as the company behind the Canadian arm of the chain comes under new ownership.
A Toronto-based company in the process of purchasing Margaritaville Canada will be evaluating the Calgary project once the transaction is complete, said its head, Dragan Matovic.
"We are going to be speaking with the various developers there and the folks at the Stampede in the near future once this transaction is hopefully completed, and then we'll decide accordingly."
In July 2009, Denver-based developer Alberta Development Partners Inc. announced the major Calgary Stampede mainstreet retail and entertainment expansion.
After delays due to the downturn in the economy, the developers are planning some financing and tenant announcements within months.
Bryan McFarland, principal of development, is in Calgary this week, meeting with several retailers, including existing tenants and new prospects. "Whatever happens with Margaritaville, we've got a great lineup of tenants to either replace them or supplement them," he said.
Eventual plans for the Stampede project include 150,000 square feet of retail space, 100,000 square feet of office space and a 300-room hotel.
It also boasts plans for "majestic entry gateways" and a plaza for gathering.
Margaritaville was to be the anchor tenant and include live entertainment and a sports bar.
Matovic said his numbered company is in the final stages of negotiating an agreement to acquire the Margaritaville licence rights for Canada.
"Subsequently, we would start focusing in on several major issues, one of which would be the growth of the company going forward and obviously assessing the merits of the Calgary project," he said.
It's too soon to make decisions before the company purchase is complete, he said, adding that the Calgary restaurant "sounds like an interesting opportunity."
Last week, Calgary Stampede announced a new partnership with Cowboys. The infamous nightclub is set to move into the Stampede Casino and is expected to attract an above-18 crowd.
