Get a little squirty bottle of lock de icer. If that doesn't work, make sure the door key is actually correct. I don't think I've physically used the keys on the doors of the truck I currently own. I don't even know it they work...

Lock could be dry or full of crap, use the straw on a can of wd40 and give it a lil squirt inside. After reading the OP again, the hanger that connects the handle to the lock could have come off, you would need to pull the door panel, which is held on with a few screws and plastic snap fasteners.

Fast forward to the end of the night, we're walking to our car, the car full of the other drunk idiots roll by saying something out the window (which we interpreted as "we ####ed your car). Went to the parking lot, sure enough couldn't get into the car, no matter how hard I tried. We saw a cop go by, asked him what to do, he recommended smashing the window... and luckily one of my friends said "isn't your car black?" Turns out we were about to smash our way into a dark blue same model year car that was parked right next to mine.
That would have been fun to explain.

i am not sure that wd-40 is the right stuff to use in this situation - i'd go for some silicone or graphite lube first.

What kind of car and how old?
If the lock turns when you turn the key, but it doesn't do anything, it's most likely the rods inside of the door. usually the rods are held together with plastic pieces where the joints are. Sometimes these pieces fall off or wear out if the car is older.
I would take the interior paneling of the door off and investigate further from there.

I have no idea if the PATS system is used with car door locks too. Might be that as well.

I would assume the app that comes with the remote star kits unlocks the doors too. Not sure though. Haven't seen it in action.

If the key turns and will lock and unlock the door but when the handle is lifted the door won't open than more than likely the cable release that attaches to the door handle has become disconnected. Could be it came out of it's clip but more than likely the clip broke especially with the cold of late. Can the door be opened from the inside to get out?

Depends on your car or remote system but they are available.
