so after such a long layoff after Layne Stanley's death, they finally get the band back on track and release a great new album, and now another one of them kicks it. that sucks

Mike Starr hasn't been in the band for nearly 20 years. He was the original bassist. Mike Inez replaced him soon after the release of Dirt. Starr was kicked out because he couldn't stay sober.

He was on celebrity rehab last year and you could tell that this was a person whose addiction was so powerful that this could happen at any time. I didn't have much faith that he could beat it.

Drugs ruined his music career and eventually took his life. RIP Mike.

Here's an appropriate youtube video featuring Starr shortly before the band moved on. Appropriate because it features another band member who died of a heroin overdose and is about another brilliant musician who died of a heroin overdose.

Jesus Christ, I thought Cantrell had died at first look at the title.

Starr hasn't played bass for Alice In Chains since they were first touring "Dirt", has to be 20 years now.

on celebrity rehab he had drug related (or drug related cardiac arrest related) brain damage, or am I mistaking him for someone else?

Saw this earlier and was going to start a thread, but had to go to work. Pretty sad. AiC is one of my favorite bands still, even though its not the same w/o Layne. Dirt, Mike's last album with the band, in particular was one of my favorite albums ever. Saw Mike on celebrity rehab and was really hoping he'd stay sober, but had a feeling it wouldn't happen.

The band released a short statement this morning:

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Members of Alice in Chains are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy - and the privacy of the Starr family - during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with the Starr family.

I think you are thinking of Steven Adler from Guns and Roses who had a stroke from a cocaine overdose.

Starr may have had damage as well but Adler was the guy who you could tell had issues as he basically lost his ability to speak and had to relearn how and speaks with a noticeable impediment now.

Unfortunately this was far to easy to forsee happening. He simply never could get over the guilt of Lane Staley's death as he had been with the singer just a day before he OD'd, knew how sick he was but did nothing about it. It was those demons that had him incapable of living a sober life.

Really seemed like a good guy who lost control and couldn't reel it back in. Sad stuff.

Sad. Its kind of been a self fullfilling prophecy for these guys, I mean the content of their music going all the way back to "dirt" was dealing with drug abuse. Tough to see a lot of those lyrics ring especially true years later and with a couple of the band members dead. Hopefully the remaining members continue to live healthy lives.
