This could be huge, although there will definitely be an appeal so we'll have to wait. If the decision is upheld the owners lose a ton of leverage, they were basically positioned to miss a season and suffer very little in terms of losses. Without that TV money both sides start to feel the financial pinch, and in the case of some owners it might be more of a crush than a pinch depending on how much debt they need to service.

The current CBA expires at 11:59pm EDT.
Although the draft will still happen, it is expected the owners will announce a lock out this afternoon.

Saints sign RB Pierre Thomas to a 4 year $12m deal. Very nice seeing the Saints being aggressive while other teams are content to wait out the CBA

Speculation is that the owners want the weekend to put together a formal proposal that will be presented to the union on Monday or Tuesday. That would a be a first in these negotiations. They aren't taking it off...just not going to be in the same room with the PA negotiators.
Also the week works to the players advantage as well...because if they want to decertify they have to do it while the CBA is still ineffect, if they dont they have to wait 6 months.

I'm already CBA'd out. This could be a painful spring/summer/fall.
I'm not passionate about either side, they both have unappealing aspects to their position. I wish fans were more organized and could apply pressure to the process.

McCarthy's deal will pay him $32.25 million over the next five years. That averages out to $6.45 million per season, significantly higher than original $5 million estimates

The only coaches suspected of earning more are Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots (more than $7 million annually), Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins ($7 million) and Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks ($6.6 million).

I am definitely on the players side in all of this. I have a hard time believing the billionaire owners who will not open their books. If they really are losing money they need to prove it.

I respect their right (or preference) to keep that private. There are some expensive buildings out there that need to be paid for, and frankly I don't care if they are making tons of money. It's not really a relevant datapoint. They have the players over a barrel and they know it, why give up that position.

The barrel isn't as big as it once was. They aren't allowed the guaranteed TV money anymore.
On another note, Tiki Barber has applied for reinstatement.

It shouldn't be released to the public but the players should see it. If the owners foot the entire cost of those buildings I would be a little more understanding. Also the need for new buildings is supposed to be because the current ones are causing them to lose money. The buildings don't really do anything for the players or the fans. Are they cool? Yes Do they make the game more enjoyable? No. New buildings = more money for the owners thats it. And actually it is a relative datapoint to what I was saying. I am on the players side because I believe the owners are full of it. You are arguing who has the upper hand not who is in the right. I was discussing who I think should win not who will win. Two different arguments.

Yikes...if this is in fact true, this thing aint ending anytime soon. And why would the PA be retaining an investment bank in CBA negotiations? Am I missing something here?
Quote:
Pash did not reveal any specifics of the league's offer and wouldn't say what the union's response was. But a source requesting anonymity told The Associated Press the NFL offered to turn over five years of profitability data to the players' union -- and the offer was rejected.
According to the source, the NFL's proposal to the union included:
-- audited league-wide profitability data with dollar figures from 2005-09, based on individual club statements;
-- the number of teams that have seen a shift in profitability in that span;
-- an independent auditor to examine the data.
A second source said the NFL Players Association rejected the league's offer because an investment bank retained by the union advised it that the proposal was inadequate.

The investment bank is to audit any figures the owners hand over to the union. Seems like a smart thing to do; bring in an expert.
And this profitability data seems to show that this won't be settled anytime soon. Apparently the mediator had specifically asked for no leaks, but now there is an owners leak that all the data the players wanted was offered and refused. That is sure to piss off the NFLPA, if not the mediator.

I guess I would expect forensic accountants before any investment company when it comes to that as the players arent looking to invest in NFL teams as far as I know. I guess maybe the bank has said investigators, it just doesnt specify.
