I believe it is free and it is worth it if you have an iphone I think.
For a touch it would have to have a data plan (not even sure that is possible) or you'd have to be on wifi.
So if this guy lost his touch and we assume it is found by someone they'd have to be on a wifi network for it to work. If he lost it somewhere without wifi or the person who found it never signs onto a wifi network I don't think he'll ever find it using mobile me. That is also assuming he had mobile me installed in the first place.
I'm sure you could solicit more opinions in the iphone/ipod touch must have apps thread.

What if the person wipes the ipod touch before he accesses wifi? Doesn't that render mobile me kinda useless?

I think for the OP; the "Find my iPhone" app is a moot point anyways. You have to install it before you lose it.
That being said; I'm not sure a wipe would get rid of it. You may not be able to remote wipe it; but you may still be able to track it depending on how the system finds it.
And I don't think you need a data plan. I installed it on an iPad I borrowed from work so I could setup my 3GS iPhones. The iPad does not have a data plan; but I could still track it.

So you'd put a SIM card in the jacket or what?

This is why you should lock the device with a pass code imo.

If you're going to the length to get a 3G caddy for you touch, I think its time to get an iphone. Locking your touch won't get it back to you if you lose it.

Maybe. I've found a few cell phones- the ones that didn't have a pass code I was able to find a good contact from their list and let them know where to get their phone.
The one that was locked I called Rogers. They said I had to bring it into a store; there was no way for them to pass along my contact info to the owner. It took me a few days to get it there; in that time the owner may have bought another phone. Somebody lazier than me might not have bothered.

But what if you just want a data plan? Frankly, I have very little use for the "phone" part of the iphone...I would, however, love if the ipod touch had the ability to connect to a 3g connection...much like the ipad.
But I'm guessing the tele companies would have a lot to say about that.....

Also regarding that, MobileMe will let you send a message to your device, so you can leave contact info that way as well. Surprisingly, that's worked for me before.
