Default Montana/Idaho Family Vacation Spots

Does anyone have any suggestions where to take the extended family for a week or two in Montana or Idaho this summer? I am looking for a anything like a resort, condo or even house rental on lake with a golf course or two nearby. There are only two young kids while the rest of the gang are in our early 30's.

I have only never stopped long in these States as I am usually passing through and have no idea what is around. I would rather run with a few recommendations from the crew here then search blindly on the net for hours on end.... at work of course.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Whitefish. 36 hole course in town, 3 other nice 18 hole courses within 10 minutes. The lake is cold but right in town plus you have the ski hill which in the summer has zip lining and treetop tours. Good food, nice people, relatively inexpensive. Whitefish is fantastic.

Coeur d' Alene Idaho

It is in close driving distance(half hour) to Spokane WA for shopping/airport. It is also a 20 minute drive from Silverwood theme park. 40 minutes from Sandpoint ID.

The golf course there is awesome. I must have lost 10 balls on the island hole.

Not too mention you're half an hour from Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake. There is so much to do in the Flathead in the summer. I can't wait to come home.

And you can pop into missoula if you want to shop at an actual mall (the Kalispell mall is a bit of a joke) or want to hit up a fuddruckers

en route to Glacier you can also stop at the House of Mystery in Columbia Falls. The house is built on a vortex. A great half day of family fun. Further east in Hungry Horse is huge dam, a huge maze and family fun park with go carts, bumper boats and other family activities. A few miles further east is the "Car is your Cage" which houses grizzly and black bears. THey come right up to your car. On the way back to Whitefish you have to stop at the Back Room for dinner. Best Fried chicken and country style ribs ever.

+1 for Whitefish.

Shopping in Kalispell is good also. You can rent a boat on whitefish lake for underr $400 for a half day.

+1 for Kalispell mall being terrible. Just go across the street to Mooses and get drunk and eat pizza.
Ha ha, Mooses at the same time.

Silverwood Theme park was awesome. The wife and I went there a few years ago during a trip to the states.

one other side note about Whitefish - the prices of food in restaurants is quite reasonable relative to the prices that are routinely charged in Banff.

The four of us grabbed some lunch at the top of the ski-hill in Whitefish and the total bill was a reasonable $35 (the kids had chicken fingers and fries) - had I been eating in Banff/Lake Louise I would have expected to pay over $50
