I recently sold my Subaru, after driving them for nearly 18 years. I know perfectly well that with the wheel drive, I am safer in cold, icy, snowy weather. This may be because of my driving skills, but I have on several occasions been able to speed up and utilize the AWD to escape out of a bad spot. I recently drifted into an intersection to avoid a car that slid through a red light, and then going sideways I was able to make the corner (something every AWD owner should practice!!!). In a front wheel drive car, my back end would have swung around and spun out. I also make it up every hill when every other car was stuck.

When coming from a dead stop on ice, the AWD distributes the weight to all tires, thus decreasing the dependency on just the front tires to pull. I can tell the difference, and routinely switch between AWD and FW cars.

I have lived here all 36 years of my life. I cannot remember a winter like this that just would not go away. It's not the coldest, but it just will not give us a break. This is the first time ever I have given serious contemplation to moving away for a milder climate.

If weather had a throat, I would repeatedly punch it.

IIRC in January of 92 or 93....the high never got above -18 and most every night was below -30. it was the first time i had seen cars frozen to the road and couldnt move. Maybe time has warped my sense of memory but i do remember how brutal it was.

I miss calgary dearly, but man i sure dont miss that kind of weather at all.

Normally we get a few chinooks, or a week or so of mild days, but this year it seems every frikkin day it is between minus 15 and 20. Not so cold it is unbearable, but cold enough it is highly irritating.

Think about how often your car got dirty and how much washer fluid you've used this winter. You guys have had it pretty easy, as usual

35 below zero driving through Okotoks this morning.

Six days to Hawaii.

When I come back in a few weeks, it will all be gone . . . .

That's pretty much my thoughts on 4WD. It helps with take offs, it helps when going up hills, it helps when turning, and it helps when you hit ice and begin to lose control. And it's fun in the mud.

I will never buy a truck that doesn't have 4x4, and if I ever buy a car, it'll either be AWD or FWD. I had RWD in an old Cutlass, and while it was fun for an 18 year old, I'm a little more concerned with getting to where I'm going these days. At least with FWD you have the weight of the engine over the propelling wheels. You might not have the same ability to take off, but it beats the living hell out of RWD. RWD is for sports cars, and sports cars belong in the garage on days like today.

Yeah it's pretty much r-tarded to say 4WD doesn't help. It also comes down to tires. One guy said FWD with winter tires is better than 4WD/AWD with all seasons and I think he's probably right. But 4WD/AWD with winter tires is the best there is for these conditions.

We had to tolerate some severe T-storms and tornado warnings yesterday, but all in all it has been really nice even for this time of year.

High of 12C today...17C tomorrow.

No, when you leave it will be gorgeous weather for a stretch, and when your plane lands back in Calgary it will be -40 again

I don't understand the people giving weather updates of their nice sunny locations...

Do you dance in front of cripples too?

So its OK to give updates of how bad the weather is where somone is...but not how nice it is where others are?

Alrighty then...I now have the rules down pat!

it just comes off as bragging
although complaining about it being cold could come off as whiney and looking for pity. I think these things are more about feeling connected to others who also are also cold, makes it feel less bad if others are going through it too, and something to talk about. then someone comes in and tells us its beautiful where they are, and you can sense thier smirk as you read it. they aren't feeling our pain, only making our weather seem worse.

This weather is wreaking havoc with my knee, and making me feel like a cripple every morning.

I am looking at flights to Phoenix right now actually. I have a week of Holidays I need to use up, and I would just like to go play some cheap golf for a week or something, and start feeling alive for a few days.
