This is my first post on the site so bare with me as I fight though it. I have been reading the site since early 2002 and must say that it is quite informative and at times very entertaining. At the present time I have explored numerous possibilities to try and solve my problem and have decided to try Calgarypuck as another one.

Short Version of the Story

My girlfriend and I have been together for over two years and as with any relationship we are finding more and more out about each other. Her family has never had any money and as a result she grew up in a less than fortunate situation. Her family could not afford a camera and that being the case she has very few pictures of herself as a child. However we were looking at the few pictures that her grandparents had taken of her and she had mentioned that she was in the Calgary Sun when she was 4 years old. The picture is of her and a few other children wearing sandwich boards (I believe that is what they are called) that are cheering on the Flames playoff run in 86. I have been to the library downtown and found the picture on Microfiche, however it is black and white and the film is scatched so bad that I can't even get a decent copy. I have called the Calgary Sun and they have no desire to look for negatives from 1986 and have told me they only go back 10 years anyhow. I have contacted the photographer that took the picture and he has informed me that the picture is property of the Sun and he doesn't get to keep many photos. I have searched the internet for other archives, but have come up with absolutley nothing. All the other public libraries do not have micro fiche.
Does anyone know of any other options that I could try.

Is the any other micro fiche in the city?
Is there a newspaper archive in the city?
Long Shot...Does anyone keep olds newspapers of playoff runs. (I did in '04)

I have been trying to do this the past month and I am/was hoping to get it to her for x-mas.

Please Advise,

TMHC

Don't most public libraries have old news papers on micro fiche?

I have found it on micro fiche in the Calgary Public Library downtown, however the quality is extremely poor. I would like to find a better quality copy if it is available.

Try the UofC microfiche... they have some of the Calgary Sun, plus other newspaper archives.

Try these.

They are probably a longshot but you never know.

If you can't find it then a scratched-up less-than-perfect copy isn't so bad.

From that comment we can determine you have a specific date/issue that you are looking for, which should help your cause considerably.

The SUN probably sees someone like you most days of the week, asking if they can look up something "in 1986" without offering specifics and, of course, they aren't going to devote any time to it.

However, they are giving you a load of baloney about not having microfiche/archive material for that specific issue. If there is one thing a newspaper will guard, it will be its own history. It would be fairly incomprehensible if they didn't have that on site. . . . . but, as I said, I can understand perfectly why they wouldn't want to bother helping you with a general inquiry.

Now that you have a specific date and even a page number, however, you might try them again. You've essentially done pretty much all the dirty work in advance and you might be luckier a second time around. Tell them you have a specific day and page number and would like to pay for a copy of it.

Another suggestion, if its that important, is to perhaps advertize or post something like that on e-bay . . . you might get lucky.

As others suggested, the U of C. I've been reading the Herald from the 80s, and the quality is pretty good. There are even scans of the flyers that came with it!
