Default A raft of Service Alberta Increases!!

effective April 1 it's going to cost a fair % more to register your vehicle and renew your licence!

http://www.calgaryherald.com/Raft+pr...403/story.html

Quote:
The Service Alberta fee increases will generate $83.5 million in revenue through hikes to vehicle registration (a $14 increase to $75), drivers licence renewal (a $20 jump to $75 for a five year renewal) and the cost of registering a mortgage at the land titles office (going up to $50 from $15).

Not surprising at all.

Running a $3 billion dollar debt, so instead of cutting spending for a few years, they'll increase what are basically taxes.

Bit of a tough situation. In a recession, governments almost always should do deficit spending. Focused on creating jobs and not on bailing out banks.

I'm fine with them taking my money, but at least have the courtesy to say thank you.

I just wish that I would remember to do the registration by mail every year. I always wind up in the registry at the last minute (or perhaps slightly over!). Those places have the worst service of any business imagineable.

They always ding you for the service fee if you try to pay by debit. I argued the point with the gal behind the counter that you should be covering that as a cost of doing business. She disagreed and I said fine. I wrote her out a cheque for the amount and said you'll have to pay the service fees processing my cheque. Too me it was the principal of the thing.

Those debit fees are just wrong to me as well. The registries offices must make a fortune, eh? Guaranteed customers, paying set prices that rise and then charging you to pay. I can't believe I didn't set the light earlier and open a registry!

It's good money (no doubt), but when was the last time you saw a registry worker and thought "Ya, that looks like a happy person living a wonderful life?"

There's a registry on 33rd Ave that I usually go to. The two people I normally see in there always look like they're one more "Ooops, I forgot my ID" away from ending it all.

Holy crap, we're 13 posts into a thread about government service costs increasing and still no post calling it a "Cash Cow".

I'd like to think the world has turned a corner, but I'm fully expecing someone to reply to my post with "But it is a cash cow".

jezz...it's still cheaper than anywhere else in the country. I am new to BC, and I feel like i am being raped by my own car payments.

I'm not thrilled that fees are going up, but I understand it.

I'm not actually upset about the raising of fees in this budget - I would argue that they could even go higher. I am (generally speaking) in favor of raising fees instead of taxes. IMO fees better target users, whereas taxes tend to be everyone subsidizing everyone else's life.

I'm not too upset about what amounts to a $18 per year tax hike.
