If you were selling the car because you couldn't pay your bills, and no one was biting but the one guy offering 10k, wouldn't you consider it?

In your example $20,000 is an arbitrary number not based in market reality. If there's only bids at $10,000 then that's the price, nothing is worth more than the highest someone else is willing to pay for it. Sure if he felt it would intrinsically be worth more at another time then he could hold on and try to find a higher bid, but apparently when he can't even pay the players small salaries we're at a point where he doesn't have that choice.
My point was as a fan to not be held hostage by Bannister and allow him to extract more money from my pockets because of this. If the Flames offered on two seperate occasions to buy the team, then there's interest in someone owning the team in Calgary and when push comes to shove it will stay. The team's not going anywhere or folding, let Bannister bathe in red ink and go bankrupt and then let the Flames pick up the pieces..
Look at this from the Flames perspective, you could buy him out now and have to pay his bills at full value, or you could wait until he goes bankrupt, stiffs his creditors and then you can swoop in and pay his creditors pennies on the dollar.

Nope, I would take out 10 million dollars in car insurance, soak my car in gas, light it, drive it off the cliff, collect the insurance money and flee to mexico.

It seems though, that while he says he wants to sell the car (which has depreciated severley in the past 6 years) he also wants the buyer to let him stay behind the wheel, on the new buyer's insurance.

It would be a shame if the Roughnecks left. Sure the ticket prices are getting a little high for the product, but it is a good night out with friends/family.
I haven't been impressed with Banister for the last few years. Kick his ass to the curb and get the Flames to take them over. Might bring back some of the people that he has ticked off over the years.

Businesses are rarely sold on an arbritrary number - rather an accepted multiple of earnings ... i'd imagine he is trying to get more than the numbers show its worth based on what its producing and the Flames are offereing closer to the actual value or perhaps less since he's vulnrable (based on past lease tactics and negotiations he's not going to get any favor from King)... Of course sports franchises are a little different but this is not a NHL, MLB, NBA, NFL or even CFL level franchise - if he's really in it to save the team not for himself he will take what he can get, if not (as I suspect) he will sell it to another city... All that said the guy has taken a beating financially for 10 years so I guess his commitment, or stuborness is to be admired...?

My face is a bum!

For all those who are saying "who cares, it sucks anyway" remember there were a lot of people who thought that about the Flames when they almost left, it still sucks for those who are fans.
I'm not one of them, I've only been to two or three games, but if this is your favorite sport it's rather annoying to watch your owner run the team into the ground.
I'd love Calgary to get an MLS team, but I'm pretty sure I'd be one of about 5,000 disappointed season ticket holders when the team folded or left town.

I would love an MLS team too, but I sincerely doubt the level of support the team would get if a soccer-specific stadium did not come with it.

No way do we get an MLS team without a commitment to building a soccer specific stadium.

There is an major indoor soccer league that plays out of the Subway Soccer Centre's West Field. It's not the greatest venue I must admit for large amounts of spectators. About $15 for rush seating. There is around 20 North American clubs in the league... The caliber of game is pretty top notch...more value for your buck than a 'Necks game. I saw one game vs LA, I was impressed.

Had an idea!
|
I like to watch the odd game or two when I can.
Would be a good idea for the Flames to buy it, provided they kick Banister out.
Given that they own the Saddledome, they could easily turn a profit. Crowds are MUCH higher than the average WHL game crowd.

I usually go to 1 or 2 games per season but it's tough as I make it to most Flames homes games which take up most of my free time and entertainment dollars.
This year has been tougher as they have been on the road so much this season.

Precisely. It's a situation where the Flames don't have to pay themselves rent (although they do have to staff the arena), and also make all of the concession money. They instantly have a financial advantage over anyone else who might own the team and play out of the saddledome. If Banister's aim was constantly to try to sell the Roughnecks to the Flames, he waited too long, and that's only his own fault.

Ha, if the alternative was to fold the team, or in your example, send it to the scrap heap then ya it would pretty much make you an idiot. Your car's value is only a function of what someone will pay you for it, who cares what your offer price is.

Why does everyone think the Flames would be entitled to all the revenues from concession etc.? Does the Flames lease entitle them to everything at the Dome? Do they get all the revenues from other events like concerts? I know they manage the arena, but that doesn't mean they get every penny that comes in. Anyone have more info on this?

I guess it depends on the mgmt agreement. Maybe they have exclusive rights to the concessions, or at least the discretion on how to distribute its revenue.
