Default Ground Floor Apartment

Hey what are your thoughts on ground floor apartments? Are they safe or better to look elsewhere?

Wouldn't be my first choice. Especially here in Vancouver.

Also, we were looking to move last year and my GF nixed any ground floor apartments immediately. She said she wouldn't feel safe at home on her own. So consider the 'lady friend' factor as well.

Depends on the area, but I've lived on the ground floor of an apartment before and never had an issue at all. It was also nice to basically have your own personal entrance to come and go through the porch rather than through the hallways.

I would never live on a ground floor after seeing a guys condo flood while he was out of town for a week. A serious water/sewage leak will eventually make its way down to you.

I heard houses have entrances on the ground floor and a couple people live in those with no problems....

I live in a duplex in NYC right now, the bottom floor of which is the ground floor. Security isn't much of a concern for me as the backyard area is in the rear of the building and I'm mid-block. Meaning someone would have to go over multiple fences, some of which have razor wire on them, in order to access the yard, not to mention they'd have to go through a business or another apartment building first just to get to that point.

The leakage thing concerns me a bit, but honestly that can hit you in a 5th floor apartment too so it didn't really factor into my decision.

I guess it depends on your options, for me the only way to have private outdoor space was to be on the ground floor or the top floor, and private roof decks around here are either very hard to find or well out of my price range.

Most people avoid them if possible.

I liked living in ground floor apartments, it made escape easier when the Langoliers came.

Depending on the building (ie elevator) not having to lug your groceries up stairs is a definite plus. They can be a bit cheaper as well, since people (on average) avoid them a bit.

What's the difference between a ground floor apartment and a house? They both have entries that are accessible to the general public...

Well single family homes and neighbourhoods are made up of good, honest, hard working people. Apartments and condos are full of bums, hobos, drug users, meth labs, and all sorts of unsavory characters.

So naturally a person buying a ground floor apartment/condo will be subjected to numerous break-ins, drive by shootings, vandalism, and all sorts of nasty stuff. Whereas the home owner will have adorable bunnies hanging out by their front door.

Generally people associate apartment complexes with people who might be undesirable. It's cheaper living, what do you expect? Most of the time it's never a problem though.

Chances are if theres a leak above a 5th floor apartment it will run down the exterior walls. You're not likely to get 6 inches of water on the floor of a 5th floor apartment.

I avoid ground floor apartments because due to the higher density of the immediate area, you tend to have people walking by your window all the time. I don't like that. Of course that's not ALL ground floor apartments, and also, there's this amazing new invention called blinds, but it still just lacks the privacy I prefer. There's just people around all the time. Especially if the apartment faces the parking lot. Sitting out on the patio having a smoke with a buddy and a car parks, feels like you're loitering in a 7/11 parking lot.

If it was a ground floor apartment in the burbs, no problem. If it was a ground floor apartment in the core, no thanks.
