DETROIT WINS A HUM DINGER
Wings 2 Dallas 1
Eric Belanger scored for the third straight game as the Wings proved to there fans that they can indeed win a game without their leader Simon Gagne. With Sean Burke standing on his head the past two games he has played, it has managment thinking tomorrow night he is due for a stinker. Damond Lankow put up the goose for the first time since being reaquired from the Yotes. It has started rumours around the league that he may not be a great number one centerman to play on the teams top line. Coach Guns may be shopping for a better set up man to play with Mr Rocket. Next up is a tilt tomorrow night in LA where the team is ready to hand the kings there arse on a platter for the second time in the past 4 days.

Flames take it to the Kings
The Calgary Sun
Flames 6 Kings 5
In what can only be described as a goaltending duel, the Calgary Flames survived the wild west shoot out with a 6-5 decision over the LA Kings.
During the warm up, Steve Yzerman, while trying to avoid an errand shot, bent down and tore his groin muscle. Stevie Y will be out of the lineup for about 4 weeks.
Flames Dave Scatchard potted 2 goals, Mathieu Biron added 3 assists, and a very boisterous Joe Nieuwendyk also potted 3 assists. Joe was overheard in the dressing room prior to the game calling a few guys out to look in the mirror and find some character. This is very uncharateristic for Joe Who but it seemed to have worked as the Flames picked up the two points.
Trade talks continued to centre around captain Jarome Iginla with a few teams making inquiries for his services today. At this point, none of the offers for Captain Jarome were what GM Axmann is looking for although one of them was very close.
Stay tuned.

Offense Sputters - Hejduk on His Way
Fresh off a 2-0 shutout loss to the Sabres, the Wild hope the addition of Milan Hejduk will help spark the offense.
Gm Grant Farhall says he is anxious to get the high scoring winger in his liineup.
"For reasons beyond me our offense just hasn't clicked this year. Milan should help with that."
Meanwhile a well-rested Hasek had a strong game but despite having almost 10 days off is tiring already. Farhall remains puzzled but will start Jamie Storr in his spot tomorrow.

'Bulin Wall holds, Coyotes onslaught ends in draw
The Phoenix Coyotes outshot the Montreal Canadiens 32-22, but Khabibulin kept them to just two goals in a 12-6 barrage in the second period. The Coyotes have outshot their opponents 127-82 in the last four games, but have only been able to pull of a single win (against the Flyers) and four points in a possible eight (1-1-2). Khabibulin had the first star of the game, saving 31 of 33 shots.
Dany Heatley and Rick Berry, each with goals in the second period, had the second and third stars of the game. Andrew Raycroft was up for the task, saving 20 of the 22 shots he faced, maintaining a 7-7-5 record.

JETS WIN OL'FASHION SHOOT-OUT!
JETS 8 SHARKS 7 OT!
Jets Record: 16-19(2)-5=39 pts—11th in the conference. 2 pts from a playoff spot. Jet Goals: CHIMERA 7 (BARNES, YOUNG) RECCHI 9 (UNASSISTED) THERIEN 4 (CAJANEK, ROENICK) YOUNG 17 (CAJANEK, RECCHI) YOUNG 18 (YORK) CAJANEK 11 (ROENICK, MIRONOV) MAYERS 7 (MIRONOV, YOUNG) (PP) BARNES 6 (RECCHI, YOUNG) Positives: We scored 8 goals! 8 goals! For some reason the offence seems to kick into high gear against the Sharks. Penalty killing was solid going 3-3 tonight. Balanced scoring was the key tonight as all 3 lines chipped in with some goals. Negatives: Well giving up 7 goals again to the Sharks sucks, especially when DiPietro finally got back into the nets. The power play only went 1-6 and surrendered a short handed goal as well. Player of the Game: No debating tonight, right winger Scott Young had a 5 point game for the Jets. He continues the lead the team in scoring. Honorable mention to Keith Carney who logged 30 minutes of ice time and was a +3. Turning Point: Late in overtime, Stu Barnes took a perfect pass from Mark Recchi and went in all alone on Noodles McLennan and slide the puck through McLennan’s five hole to give the Jets the win. Up Next: Tomorrow vs. the Avs!

Hmm... the mighty Jackets stopped by the Leafs... hopefully the upcoming deal the Jackets made with the Sabres will help get the team back to its winning ways.

No help for Defoe
The Carolina Hurricanes left their goaltender hung out a dried with no goal support tonight as the Hurricanes took on the Tampa Bay Lightning. Bryon Dafoe who was backstopped the Hurricanes to wins in his last 5 starts was dealt a loss as the Lightning were able to get 2 goals past the hot goaltender.
The Lightning opened up the scoring mid-way through the first as Martin Rucinsky scored his 5th goal of the season. Young rookie Corey Perry also tallied a goal at the 13 minute mark of the 2nd as the Lightning took a 2-0 lead over the ‘Canes
Alexander Ovechkin was able to add the lone goal in the 3rd putting the Hurricanes one the board and bringing the game within one. The goal marked the 13th of the season as the line of Ovechkin/Weight/Blakee continue to produce at a consistent pace.
The Hurricanes head to Pittsburgh on Thursday to face the Penguins and hope to rebound from the 4-0 defeat the powerhouse birds handed the ‘Canes a week ago.

Leafs win a close one.
The Leafs beat the favored Blue Jackets on Tuesday night, 5-4. The Jackets scored first but Brent Johnson couldn't hold a 4-3 lead entering the 3rd period. An unassisted goal by Marc Savard was the winner. The Jackets did outshoot the Leafs, but neither team was great. Henrik Lundqvist was good enough to end the Leafs 2 game losing streak.
The positives: Goals from 3 different lines. The Leafs offense hasn't been great this year, but at least they can throw a balanced attack at the opponent. Henrik Lundqvist rebounds from a bad game, making 31 saves and getting the win.
The negatives: The Leafs continue to allow a lot of shots and a lot of goals. This is probably due to the injuries on the blueline. Jackman, Rivet and Souray are playing big minutes and seem to be wearing down. The team needs Wade Redden back fast.

Kings Scorched up North
Calgary, Alberta - The Los Angeles Kings suffered a loss to their divisional rivals the Calgary Flames tonight by a score of 6-5. In what was one of the more eventful games of the year for the Kings, the lack of quality goaltending once again proved decisive. Add injury to insult, reports were confirmed early in the day the Dan Cloutier would miss the remainder of the CPHL year.
"We are in a tough spot here with our number one goaler out for the year." said GM Sra. "We have a solid guy in Prusek but it looks like we may have to strengthen the squad for the future". With Sra's remarks, the future of Tkachuk has been placed in doubt. Tkachuk, who joined the team recently, has provided the needed spark on the first line but with the lack of defensive play the team may be forced to move the sniper to a team looking for the last piece to push them into a playoff spot. More details will be reported as they are gathered.

Sharks Score SEVEN...but lose in OT to blasted Jets!
For the second time in the last three meeting versus the Jets the Sharks were able to score seven times...Unfortunately, in those two games the pesky Jets were able to score fifteen times. As a result of the three recent games the teams split them 1-1-1 (although the Sharks gain the extra point by losing in OT).
In tonights game the Russian Redneck again had a strong game, tallying 1 goal and 1 assist along with a somewhat amazing +3. Grigorenko has been hot lately, ever since being put on the top line with Smolinski and Rolston. Other players that stood out were Pandolfo with 2 goals (1 shorthanded) and Jeff Cowan scoring with only 3 minutes of ice-time.
OTOH...goaltending was pathetic with Cechmaniac scared off the ice after giving up 5 goals on 24 shots. Mclennan was not the answer either as he gave up 3 goals on just 12 shots.
In keeping with the theme of the evening Cleveland beat Portland in a low-scoring game- 12-11! Stars of this game were- John Doherty with 2G/2A, Arseny Bondarev with 2G/1A and Dustin Johner with 3A.
The doughnut king was very happy with the win but Medvedev was here to say "Guys, a bakers dozen is much better" as he headed towards the nearest Krispy Kreme! "Mmmmmm....doughnuts!"

Oil slip past the Canucks lst evening with a 5 - 4 victory. giving the Oil 8 wins in a row heading into Atlanta tonight. Jay Bouwmeester scored the game winner at 15:02 of the third period registering the only goal of the period.
The game was a well ballanced game with the shots on goal ending at 30 - 28 for the Oil. Bergeron walked away with the games first star after regestering 2 goal and adding an assist.
Tonight is a game we have been looking forward to .......... a measuring stick if you will ............... Oil vs. Thrash ............ buy a ticket

Wow. Just wow. Blanked by the struggling Caps 3-0, and outshot 34-18. One of the two teams was well prepared for this one, and it certainly wasn't us.
Eric Desjardins being on the IR isn't helping, but that is simply no excuse for this poor showing.
Given the goal of getting into the playoffs this season, it's doubtful that we'll sit tight through this dry spell for much longer without shaking a few things up.
There was a rumour in the dressing room before the game that GM NoPants had sent a fax to some other GM's about Martin Straka being on the block, but this has not been substantiated. This while local media has suggested that the Blues are looking at bringing in a stud D-man to fill the gap while Desjardins is out...time will tell.

Thrashers play pond hockey with Avs!
The Thrashers decided to forget about defensive hockey today and came out on the top of a 6-5 victory over the fast sliding Avalanche from Colorado.
Coach Peterson was perplexed at his team, but put it down to looking forward as opposed to playing the game in front of them. Tonites game vs the slimy Oil scum from Edmonton seemed to be forefront in the minds of the players, and because of this almost let the Avs steal a game.
Goalie Statistics Patrick Lalime (THR), 22 saves out of 27 shots, W, 26-7-1

HAWKS SMACK NORDS
The Nordique jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period lastnight in the Windy city. But the Hawks stormed back leave the game tied 3-3 in the second period. Rookie Jussi Jokinen got the Hawks motivated when he stole the puck from Donald Audette who was standing at center ice checking his wallet for his retirement papers. Jokinen steaked in alone on an unsuspecting Antero Niittymaki and fired the puck over his head to put the Hawks on the board.
Coach/GM Becky will also investigate how Lee Stempniak managed 7 min of ice time, and 12 minutes in the sin bin.
We are thrilled to come away with the win, because id we had lost yet another game we might have had to trade the entire team for some heart.

NO VOKOUN NO WIN
Ottawa - Senators rolled out to a quick 2-0 lead but the Preds cam back and tied it up with goals from DANDENAULT and HINOTE. The gmae didnt stay tied for long as the Sens got another two qucik ones to take a 4-2 lead into the first intermission. SANFORD looked bad as he allowed 4 goals on 14 shots.
Another goal by the Sens which gave them a 5-2 lead, ended SANFORD'S night. He allowed 5 golas on 17 shots. The Preds were dealry missing the number one man in VOKOUN. In came the highly touted MONTOYA, who had just been called up. Montoya didnt play bad in the 2nd as he allowed one goal on 9 shots in the second frame. The Preds responded with 2 goals of their own from NASLUND and SANDERSON. After two periods the score was 6-4 for the home side.
In th third the highly skilled Sens blew the game wide open. They scored 4 times on the rookie netminder on their way to a 10-4 blowout. Montoya faired a lilttle better than Sanford but the inconsistency of both tenders lead a total disaster for the Preds.
The team now comes back home to face the Flyers.
NOTES: Sanderson scored his 16th goal of the season. Preds were 0 for 1 onthe powerplay and 5-7 on the penalty kill. The 3 stars were all Senators in Smyth, Pronger, and Kozlov. The Admirals on the other hand blew out the Sens farm squad by a score of 9-4.
