Oh, but its okay for the anti flouride side to state apocalyptic health issues will occur in the general population if fluoride isn't removed? Tit for tat, I say. Ya know, I was in a mall today. A guy took a drink of water from a fountain, turned blue & died on the spot. "Damned fluoride", I thought. Another precious life cut short.

Exhuming this thread just to hammer home the point that, at least on Calgarypuck, levelheaded folk... er... I mean THE MAJORITY of people are in favour of a fluoridated water supply.
I really hope this gets re-addressed and overturned, mainly to keep the status quo. But I confess, there's a small part of me that would LOVE to just rub this in Druh Farrell's face.

Under 200 votes and 6000 views is hardly hitting anything home.
Again, the biggest issue is the legal stand point that elected bodies are forcing medication on the population. Because commonwealth nations are built on the basis of freedom, fluoridation should never be forced upon the population again.
I am glad it is out of our water. I understand that fluoride reacts differently when other elements combine with it, however, I believe that enough fluoride reaches the masses voluntarily through other means via the dental association and our water should be as pure as it can be.

The elected bodies forced nothing. The elected bodies were acting on behalf of the people's will. They were doing their job.
THESE elected bodies, are not. These elected bodies are enforcing the will of their own personal opinions and those of a vocal minority in the city.
Had the issue of water fluoridation come up during municipal election debate and been a platform of ANY of the candidates, I would have marched myself down to the polling station and voted for a pro-fluoride Mayor and Councillor.
But it never did. It snuck in, and was pushed through by 10 people who thought their personal opinions, feelings, and values superceded the will of the people.

If you have such a problem with fluoride removal, you could have shown up to hearings/discussions and voiced your support for fluoridation, but you didn't.
It seems you are arrogantly assuming that the city council members did not weigh the pro's and con's of the issue at hand before making a decision. Alot of new studies and information have become available since the 1980's (or 1950's in American cities) when Calgary initially voted to start fluoridating the water supply. Maybe people need updated information on fluoride risks/benefits?
I'm not sure what some are so concerned about anyways. A lack of fluoride in your water is going to make zero difference to the health of your teeth.
Even if 99% of the population supports water fluoridation, you cannot force medicate the other 1% who don't want it. If you and others love your fluoride so much, you can add fluoride tablets to your water or eat your toothpaste or whatever.

If there were any.
But there weren't.

I'm not assuming. Arrogant, yes. But I'm not assuming.

In the small doses Calgary was treating the water with fluoride (0.7 PPM total, according to the city website), there are no risks. Only benefits.

Are you certain? I guess I assumed that there would be discussion.
If that is true, what kind of circus are they running up there? Even Lethbridge City Council is having a fluoridation discussion open to the public on Feb. 28th. I will be there.
Fox News (yeah, yeah) recently had a dentist on their show where he talked about the risks of fluoridation.

Man, just for giggles, I googled Floride + mind control.
Totally awesome results.

This took the city by complete surprise. Which is part of my frustration, because there was such a BLATANT lack of community involvement. It was Druh Farrell and 9 people either just as hokey as she is, or easily fooled by her crackpot ramblings.
Ray Jones, my former alderman, suggested tabling the issue for another Plebescite in 2013, but Druh and company said that wasn't good enough. They wanted it now, now, now.
If the issue of fluoridated water went to plebescite, and the votes turned out 60/40 in favour of removing it from the water, I would accept it (but I wouldn't like it.)
I cannot accept this. I cannot accept ANYTHING that hare-brained moron comes up with. And she's not even my councillor.
Not that it would make a difference, but it appears my Councillor, B. Pincott, abstained from voting during the proceedings on fluoride.

Well I don't know about mind control, but fluoride does have supposed effects on the brain/behavior. Like I mentioned, fluoride was first used (in higher concentrations) in WW2 era prison camps to make prisoners docile and sterile.
This was observed by chemist Charles Perkins, and noted in a book by Joseph Borkin, "The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farben"
Joseph Borkin was the chief economic advisor of the Anti-trust Division of the Department of Justice and was responsible for the wartime investigation of the IG Farben dominated cartels.

Just to add- she came up with this less than 3 months after the election. Which leads me to believe one of the follow has to be true:
- She suddenly came to the realization that something that had been in place for 20+ years was suddenly bad.
- She had this in mind before the election, and knew that either the plebiscite
would fail; or it would cost her enough votes to lose her seat.
I'll even go so far as to say had the vote been 50.1 to 49.9 I could have respected that. Or had there been a recommendation from Alberta Health; sure. But not the sudden decision of a Councilor.
