That's what I've been doing with Stern lately, 1.5x speed actually.

For podcasts I like Carolla and check out Kevin Smith's show from time to time. One annoying thing about Smodcast though, the big guy always starts a coughing fit when he gets laughing too hard, extremely gross.

It's much more manual than iTunes (I think, never used it for podcasts) but it's better for my setup at work because I don't want iTunes on my computer.

I read somewhere that Songbird has a few options for downloading podcasts. It is an open-source alternative to iTunes, although I can't personally attest to whether it is any good, less bloated than iTunes, etc.

Here's a screen capture of what I listen to. Some are daily, some are weekly, some are less often:

Carolla's podcast network is what I like:Adam Carolla Show
 Film Vault
 Dave's of Thunder
 Low Budget FM

Add in The Moth, and those are basically my favorites.

A little shameless self promotion, my buddy and I are just finishing off our 2nd season of podcasting weekly for the NFL. We have about 500 listeners, and it seems to be gathering some momentum.
Take a listen, feedback appreciated. It's called Ultimate Football Talk:

Holy ####.
Thank you 2 billion times.
I can't believe how perfect this is.
EJ Hradek from Espn hockey actually sounds un mouthbreathing, Rick Mcinnis Ray is a breeze, rather than his usual windbag self.

You may have also solved my annoyance with the shorter podcasts' annoying intros. I guess the only drawback may be that I'm speaking slightly faster to people.

BTW - I tried downloading "Real Time with Bill Maher" and iTunes does nothing. It adds an entry to my iTunes library, but doesn't actually download anything. I click on the title and it says the file is corrupt, but in reality the file doesn't even exist.
I tried with both the Canadian and U.S. iTunes store, same result.

This is basically my feelings, I cannot stand iTunes.

Thanks for the help.

I noticed that too. I assume it is just a bug that will be fixed soon.

Haha, as did I, J pold. Great thread.
My favorite is Sklarbro Country, and I've added several recommendations from this thread.

One I didn't see is, Tim and Sid: Uncut.

Go at them in 2x speed. Sooo much better. 2 in the time of one.
I wonder what is the limit you could still comprehend? 4-5x?

How do you play a podcast in iTunes in 2x speed? I have been looking through iTunes10 and cant see how to double the speed of playback. Thanks.

Pretty sure you can only do it when listening on an iPod Touch or iPhone.
