I'll try to post a picture later, between my wife and I, we've got 7 two wheeled vehicles in our garage. (3 motorcycles and 4 bicycles).

I had a tank bag, top case, side cases and a tent strapped to the pillion seat for my cross-continent trip, but for short trips, I just throw on a backpack and go. There's nothing wrong with a tank bag though, and I love my Pacsafe bag that I can lock to keep things secure while I'm not with the bike.

I think the main purpose of this thread is to torment us Alberta living bike owners right now!

My wife and I are doing that ride to Fossil this summer, its about 200 miles one way from where I live. The weather here sucks in the winter, but its an awesome place for motorcycles during the summer.

I don't think you can go wrong with either an expandable tank bag or a medium sized tailbag.

To be honest, I've never taken any of my bikes out without having a tankbag. They're where I put spare shoes, a phone, keys, etc, etc, etc and are an indispensable bike accessory.

GW Cycleworld always has a HUGE selection of tank/tail bags. The service ain't always uber-friendly, but you'll find some really solid gear. I'm VERY partial to Cortech - they're nothing short of excellent.

Edit: D'oh! Didn't realize that OP is from the USA. Let me suggest shopping online (motorcycle superstore is a good place to start)

Your near SF right? I'm actually down here on a business trip and going to rent a bike for a couple of (cold and rainy) days.

I'm doing the #1 and the 84 (La Honda) other little twisties SW of Palo Alto, you have any other good rides I should check out?

I can and have ridden all year here on the coast but it's good to have good rain gear and an electric vest helps too.

Rutuu is gonna have to learn to suffer through the low-midwinter riding temps here. Like 17° and crap like that. I have to put the shell on my mesh jacket, it sucks. Dude, make sure you get a very, very ventilated jacket, a Canadian's first summer of riding in Brisbane is a sweaty experience, trust me. And watch out for parking lots... you'll be able to stay on the left on the roads, but in a parking lot there's no indicators that you're on the wrong side like traffic parked alongside the road or road signs... post your experience here when you get screwed up in a parking lot. Trust me, you will, we all do.

With my last bike ( GSXR600 ), I used a backpack. You can get them where the backing is damned near bulletproof ( the part between your back and the stuff you are carrying ) so you dont have to worry about stuff being a danger. Frankly a tank bag is much more dangerous ( as its just canvas between your stuff and impaling your gut ). Just don't put a ton of weight in then go out scraping pegs, its amazing what even 20 lbs can do to your balance.

That said, one a pure sports bike, I never found a solution or set of saddle bags that didn't look like complete crap. Now that I'm getting a bit older, my next ride will be either a BMW or Triumph sport tourer, which are much more friendly towards storage.

I suppose how bags look on sportbikes is subjective. I personally love the way my 600rr looks fully loaded.

Backpacks are fine for commuting but suck for riding any kind of distance. When I get my 84 Interceptor running reliably I'm going to start using that as my year around commuter/rain bike. As my CBR is going to get more tracktime come next year.

The littlest Interceptor was my very first street bike, an '84 as well (the year they were a metallic maroony-red with white). Just reading your post made me wax nostalgic and get all verklempt. I love me my V4's. Serapth, are you considering the VFR 1200? Still plenty sporty, and decent grocery-hauling capacity.

If we feel like going off into a side track of "my first bike" Mine was a FZR600, probably the perfect starter bike imho.

Sorry, just got to this - I was in Texas for the weekend. #1 is really scenic, but the Santa Cruz Mountains (go through Saratoga road in the city Los Gatos, just south of Santa Clara) is great, but know that there are lots of bikes and sport cars on there (Lots of Ferarri's, Lamb's, Tesla's, et al) - sort of like a rich people get together where they showoff and race through the curves.

Do you have a link or name for the backpack?
