Wow. I can't believe how upset some people are that Metric was performing during the intermission. I admit I'm a huge Metric fan. Not because they're an indie band but because they're talented musicians and make catchy music that I enjoy.
Just because you don't like Metric and haven't heard of them doesn't mean it wasn't a great choice by the NHL. They're a big Canadian band that's not completely mainstream, their music is fast and upbeat (too bad they didn't play Gold, Guns, Girls), and they're not Def Leppard.
Puckluck you may not like Metric and I'm not telling you that you have to. Lots of people do like their music and there's nothing wrong with that.
Metric is highly acclaimed, have gone Platinum on two albums, won a Juno, were nominated for the Polaris prize, and have won best Alternative album.
I don't like Nickelback but you don't hear me bitching about how much Nickelback sucks when I easily could so how about you STFU.
Nickelback are popular because people are lazy. People generally just want to be entertained when they listen to music, watch TV/movies, read, etc. They don't want to have to do a lot of thinking when they're getting their entertainment fix.
I think your argument is right but 'Lazy' is the wrong word. People will take offense to it and miss the point of your arguement.
I think a better way to put it would be that Nickleback is Accessible Music. It doesn't challange anything, its catchy, its on the Radio, its been designed to flow in and our of your head effortlessly.

So you never listen to a song unless it has some profound message? I'm not looking for enlightenment during a workout, I'm looking to keep my energy and motivation level up. I wouldn't call it lazy music. It's just triggering a response on a different level.
Since we're on the topic of independent music... If you have never heard of this cat, you know nothing about music. Very independent, very intense, and wayyyyy better than Nikelbak.

Sure, but it's not like Nickelback does any of those things at a particularly high level. For some people it's catchy but you're not seriously going to tell me that is chalk full of complexity and substance.
It isn't. It's formula music, but that doesn't make anyone who listens to them lazy. It has an upbeat style and the lead singer's voice is a very unique sounding one that is easy to recognize. Could be any of those reasons or others why so many like them - doesn't have to be laziness. Therefore it is very unfair to put such a huge group of listeners in a box like that.
Wow. I can't believe how upset some people are that Metric was performing during the intermission.
Are there really that many people that were upset that they were there?
I have read a ton of arguments debating which music that people should like and whether liking Nickleback means anything and there were comments about people not knowing who Metric are but there really doesn't seem to be a whole lot of complaints about them being there.
The biggest "complaint" (and I don't think it should be classified as one) is that people didn't know who they were.

Of course not. I listen to really lame country music when I'm in the mood. I like it, but deep down I know there's nothing grand about it. There's nothing really even that profound about Metric. Lazy was probably the wrong word, but it's been proven in quite a few studies that people will often opt for the entertainment that doesn't require a lot of thought, analysis, or attention when given a choice between that and a more complex counterpart.

Come on now your lordship. Metric fans are getting put into an effeminate hipster box. It's only fair we put Nickelback fans in a box!

God, nobody's saying that if you haven't heard of Metric you don't know anything about music. People are just surprised that you haven't heard of them because they're a fairly well acclaimed and well known band. We get that you're not happy that they played at the Heritage Classic. You know what? It's too late, they already played it, no matter how much you complain that's not going to change.

for the love of x-mas someone kill this thread...OR make everyone who posted in this thread meet up and pick sides (Metric lover/Metric hater) then rumble. It was good enough for the Outsiders it damn well better be good enough for CP.

Again, where are all these posts of people pissing on those who don't like Metric?
There are a ton of posts in which people say something to the effect of "sorry it wasn't Nickleback" to anyone saying they didn't enjoy the Metric performance.
I would say those are posts "pissing" on people that don't like Metric.
As well a lot of talk about how if you don't know Metric you obviously don't know music.
I can pick out specific posts for you but it is pretty clear that there are negative comments about posters from both sides.

You're right, lazy was the wrong word. Should've gone with effortless. There's no effort required to listen to Nickelback. It's simple and people are used to the sound.

That's not important anymore.
What did you think of Mark Gormley?
I think his band is breaking ground for Casio to become a major player in the professional battery operated keyboard market.

Sorry dirty peasant. Nobody was putting Metric in a box...just a lot of people had never heard of them and found their first impression to be a negative one.
Poor Metric! Their reputation will be forever ruined, Flames fans on an internet message board had never heard of them and now wouldn't listen again! No wait, they don't care. And neither should you. If you enjoyed them, great. 99% of internet pissing matches happen because one side of a particular debate feels their opinion to be more worthy than the other and feels if they try hard enough they will convince the other side to change their mind.
A fruitless endeavour. Personal attacks, generalizations, they all won't help your cause. May as well just accept that we're all still going to disagree in the end.
