How are they even remotely "emo-ish". Most of their songs are upbeat. They have a few slow songs, but so do a lot of bands.
I can buy that some people hadn't heard of them or heard their music. There are many top 40 groups that I have probably never heard of because I don't listen to those stations, don't watch Much Music or go to nightclubs. I also don't pretend that the music I like is superior.
I just hate the whole, "well, I never heard of them, so they must suck" attitude. Or, "they are an independent band, therefore they must be emo and their fans are snobby". Newsflash, almost all musicians start off as independent (the only exceptions are guys like Justin Bieber).

The most disturbing part of this thread is that someone called Nickleback "hard" rock.

I hadn't heard of Metric before, but I like what I heard. It's always great to be introduced to a good band.

Relax guy. The emo comment was a generalization I use for wimpy music (kidding). Does new wave-ish work better than emo?
I'm not sure if you're referring to me with the "I've never heard them, so they must suck comment. I've heard them and I think they suck. Can I see why people like them? Absolutely, very catchy music for the most part.
Doesn't change the fact I dislike their music. I just don't generally like pop music, along with a lot of other people, relax. People can choose to dislike a band you like, it's fine. I don't need to hear most of the music on x-92 to know I won't like it, if someone plays it for me will I give it a chance? Absolutely.
For the record my music is superior. I'll go back to listening to my propagandhi album now.. It's funny a lot of people don't like them and I prefer that, more room at their concert for me!
I love these music debates, (my username is from a band I can't stand. the last album they made that I liked came out in 2000, just before I joined the forum! lol).
Go back, listen to and enjoy your emo band, listen to what you like.

My only beef is with so many of you having narrow fields of music you enjoy.
I love music, not genres or whats hip/not hip, indie, not indie, cool, not cool.

I enjoy Metric, their music is somewhat hollow but they offer something upbeat that I can run to. They are the Nickleback of the indie music scene in my opinion, they are enjoyable to listen to, but most of their songs sound the same or are at least similar sounding.
The NHL brought in two young Canadian bands which is good because at least they are trying something new. Granted music snobs who like them and music snobs who don't will argue and drain the fun out of anything.
Also Emily Haines is pretty hot in that coked out sort of way.

I'm relaxed, I was just wondering why you would label a band "emo-ish", when they are not. It would be like calling Justin Bieber "rap-ish", or Nickleback "punk-ish". I wouldn't even call Metric "new-wavish" They are just a rock band that never signed to a major record company. People are way too quick to try and label everything into genres these days.

I like Propagandi too (even though their preachiness wears a little thin after a while) and even met them several times. We had mutual friends back in Winnipeg. Some of their songs dabble in what you probably call wimpy or emo music (see Gifts or Rio de la San Atlanta, MB). They even promote indy music (they made a CD for a Winnipeg band called Painted Thin who is more of a mellow (or wimpy) type of music. John K. Samson even released some independent solo stuff and then started The Weakerthans who are probably both more "emo-ish" than Metric.

I think Metric sucked, but I still give props to the Flames & the NHL for bringing in some fresh faces. Too often events like these are the domain of washed up "classic" rock acts that haven't had a hit since 1978, and it's nice to see the organizers at least trying to stay current. 5 for Fighting in the pre-game was the musical highlight for me, but my wife actually made me change the channel after we suffered through that first Metric song.

I agree! This song was perfect for the event : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf2IqQ9SvmA
The only part I didn't like was at the end when he blurted out
"Go Kings"

I just wanted to say that old music is totally irrelevant and bands like Metric are NOT interchangeable and disposable.
That's why every modern pop song you've ever heard was plagiarized or sampled from 2009 and every best albums of all time list is dominated by bands from post 2000.

Jesus Christ, nobody said old music is irrelevant. It's not like the options were Led Zeppelin or Metric and the NHL chose Metric. The options were likely Metric, other current but likely smaller Canadian bands, or washed up CanCon bands from the 70s and 80s who were never that good to begin with (i.e. Loverboy, Kim Mitchell, BTO, etc.).

I mostly listen to older music, but I like some newer stuff.
Why does it seem like so many people think that it's only OK to like one type of music? If you like Metric, you must hate older music and can't possibly also like heavier stuff?

OT (not like the whole thread isn't anyway), but I heard the singer from Loverboy talking on the radio before. He was really downplaying their success. He outright said that the only reason why they had any success was because radio stations had to play Canadian content and that they played on that.
Say what you want about Metric, but they have been around for almost 10 years and only started getting radio play after their last album. The radio doesn't play them because they need the content (althought I guess it helps). They were asked by the Rolling Stones to open for them in New York, so I think that says something about their status as a legitimate band.

Holy crap! Nickleback opened up for the Stones in 2006!!!! Along with Richie Kotzen, The Living End, and Airbourne!! All those bands are AWESOME!!!
Stevie Wonder opened for the Rolling Stones in the 70s too. Very glad to hear that Stevie Wonder's musical legacy is now as legitimate as Metric!!

I didn't go to the game for a musical act (or acts) and the fact that there were any was cool (it is too bad you couldn't promote small time bands in the 2nd intermission of hockey games - maybe build a stage(s) that can lower down to 10 feet above ice level (to allow zamoboni to do its thing).
Wouldn't even want to offer my opinion of they are good or bad. I think if you were a fan of the band and liked seeing them there - great, and if you were not, too bad, it was better than human bowling.
