Not only that, he is one of the best color commentators ever! The one season he had with Ed Whalen on 2&7 was awesome.
Too bad he only did it for half a year before he joined the wings. The guy they replaced him with, John Garrett.

Met quite a few players over the years, and never seemed to be akward.... except.... one.
When I was 12, in a total bone head moment, I heaved a slurpee off of the overpass between Lake Bonavista and Southcentre that crossed Anderson drive. Boom right into the windshield of a white car. We booked it, and started running towards the mall entrance, and about half way through the parking lot, a white BMW stops in front of us, Doug Riseborough gets out, grabs me by the throat, calls me a f'n punk, holds me by the scruff of the neck as he walks to the trunk of his car and opens it. All the time I was aplogizing, as it really was an accident. I wasn't thinking....etc etc. I thought I was dead, and going to be thrown in the trunk. When he opened the trunk he pulls, no....rips the towel off his golf bag, and tells me to clean it up, or he'll call my parents. So when he let go of me, and handed me the towel, I did what any other 12 year old punk would do. Threw the towel back at him told him to f'off and ran for my life. Thank god he didnt chase us down, because we probably would have been killed.
After all these years, I have said to myself, if I ever run into Doug Riseborough again, I would probably apologize... nah... I would probably throw another slurpee at him, and tell him to f'off again for the Gilmour trade.

Man I remember that overpass and throwing random objects off of it.
It was too bad I had to walk through two really creepy trailer parks to get to it.

Good for you. That idiot was the beginning of the end of the Flames franchise for the better part of a decade.

Ok, this happened about 10+ years ago, when I was a high schooler working at the Husky Gas Station in Lake Sundance. At the time, there were quite a few ex-Flames living in the community; Jamie Macoun, Joel Otto, Colin Patterson, Carey Wilson, & Dana Murzyn, whom this is about. Of course it was usually a cool experience getting to meet retired Flames.
My boss at the gas station, was this crusty intimidating old pr!ck. This one particular afternoon, Murzyn stopped in with his half-ton, asked me to fill it, and walked to the Husky Convenience store, adjacent to the gas station (back then they were separate).
So I do my thing, pump the gas, squeegee the windows, and then hang up the filler, and meet Dana inside. He walks inside, and I notice he has each hand full with a Snapple (glass bottle), and a chocolate bar. I tell him the total, and how he'd like to pay. So instead of placing his items on the counter, he proceeds to try and reach inside his pocket and grab his wallet, but fumbles the Snapple & drops it on the floor, where it smashes into a gross mess, for a lowly pump jockey to clean up.
Coinciding with this mishap, my boss walks through as he returns from the mechanic shop in the rear.
"still got the same hands eh Murzyn", and continues his way on through to the convenience store.
I couldn't restrain myself, and let out a little giggle. Dana, quickly gave me his credit card, apologized and left.

(I have a few more player experiences, and an especially damning one of Trevor Kidd)

One April a few years back i saw Kidd at the dome. He gave one of the worst playoff performances against the Sharks in playoff history. He had a mullet too.

I've heard that too. Not sure.
Again back in High School ( I said about 10 years ago before, but it's really 15+. sigh really dating myself) I got asked to be a shooter for the Trevor Kidd Goalie School, at the Family Leisure Centre (Trico Centre)
This was around the time, that Kidd was on his decline in Calgary, yet I was still somewhat a fan. My brother was a goalie at this school too, and idolized Trevor. Goalies have this weird afficionado with equipment, so all the kids yearned to try on Trevor's catcher, or check our his helmet. Trevor though was always so anal with his gear (Luongitis), so only one or two goalies would get to check it out (under Trevor's close-watch), as part of a reward for their performance that day.
Anyway, that's to give a bit of background into Trevor's personality. I noticed as the day's went on, that he was pretty laisez fairre with us shooters, until we had a guest shooter a couple days into one of the hockey school weeks. The young guy, had a learning disability of some sort, and it was quite apparent from a distance even. He was brought in as a sort of "Big Brothers/ Make-a-Wish" type deal, and really it wasn't a big deal to us shooters, as we tried to put him in a place that he could be a passer, or would fetch missed/saved shots. He was also a big Kidd fan.
There's 6 nets/stations (4 in the neutral zone with a sole shooter), and our net is one of the two end zones, where we there's 3-4 shooters. The goalie is to follow the puck, to help with their t-pushes, positioning, angles and finally to stop the shot. Generally pass it 2 or 3 times, before testing the goalie.
Anyway, Trevor comes over to our station, and the young fella with the learning disability, somehow got mixed up with teh original shooter, when they were retrieving pucks. So the original guy is now the retriever (4th - sort of behind the net). The remaining 3 of us, are positioned with myself in high slot, flanked by the other two on the face-off dots. So the drill starts, and this kid misses a pass to me. Grab another puck, I pass it to the kid, and he tries to shoot, and cant get the puck off the ice, with his shot.
Trevor after seeing this, yells across the rink to one of the head instructors, "Hey ___, you couldn't find me a shooter, that could raise the puck?" The kid hears this, and looks really upset, and skates off the ice to his mom. There they proceed to take off his skates in plain view & leave the rink.
Never heard of Trevor ever reconciling with him. I bet he got a new favourite goalie.

Perhaps not after the first pass, but when he tried to shoot, it was definitely apparent. Further, he was a poor skater, so that made it more obvious.

No embarrassing stories but I have run into quite a few players in the elevators of our building (usually engage in the standard elevator talk):
-Bertuzzi
-Cammalleri
-Gio
-Jokinen (has a very nice family, very friendly)
I think Gio is the only one living in the building this year.
A good friend of mine was buddies with Nolan Baumgartner (played for the Canucks for a bit). When he was in town we'd usually end up at Cowboys (9th ave location) after the games and just get debauched and have a really good time. Most of those memories are pretty blurry though.
This same buddy also got us into some upper level box tickets every now and again (company his dad worked for), and one night Lanny comes walking into the box and just starts shooting the breeze with us. Very cool.

First of all, welcome to CP! You picked the perfect thread to get involved in. These kinds of discussion are what make CP an awesome place to hang out, IMO.
Second, of course Rocky Thompson rocks. It's in the name.
Third, Theo takes a lot of crap because of some of his antics. Almost any story I hear about meeting him in person is positive, and people have great things to say about him. I know when I met him at one of his book signings he was very accommodating. Chapters was warning everyone who came in that he was just going to sign the book and then you moved on, but Theo took the time to shake everyones hands and pose for pictures if you had a camera. He would also take a moment to chat with you, like the lady in front of me who saw him play minor hockey and mentioned that. He humored her in a very genuine way. It's too bad he can't be that kind of person all the time, but that is a little much to expect of anyone let alone Theo Fleury and the troubles he's seen.

I want to know how you can tell from afar that someone has a learning disability.

Sometimes body language and their difficulty to move fluently. At the very least Trevor could have recognized that this person wasn't exactly a gifted athlete and not ruin his experience.
EDIT: Yeah, as cam_wmh pointed out it was a little beyond a learning disability. I can see why you would have questioned that phrase alone. I just read it immediately as a type of obvious disability, and not just a learning one. Hell, half the people I graduated with had a learning disability. Mostly they just didn't want to.

He probably meant to say a "developmental" or "mental" disability. In any case, regardless, Kidd acted like a total jerk in this story.

I was doing my best to be politically correct. Forgive me, but if I may be so blunt, he had a type of ######ation. Flattened crown to his skull, and undersized.
You see 3 top level hockey players working with your goalie, and then this anamoly -- PERHAPS -- I dunno, with a bit of diplomatic tact, ask your peers what his story is.

Rocky now lives here in Oklahoma City and is a coach for the Edmonton Oilers AHL team .... I met his wife at the local rink ( she is smoking hott btw) where she was watching her kids practice. I only said something to her because I noticed she had a grit hockey tower. I was asking where she found one around here as the only place I had seen one was in Calgary. She said ohh Calgary you probably know my husband. His name is Rocky Thompson... I said uhhh NO . She said he played for the Flames and your wearing a Flames shirt. I told her I was new to hockey and just introduced to the Flames a few years ago. I had to call one of my buddies from CP to ask who he was/is
HAHAHAHA!
