I am flying to Maui on Saturday, I haven't flown to the states in a long long time. What can I expect as far as security goes? I feel like I should wear a cup so I don't get my balls fondled.

When I went through the x-ray machine was down so they did the pat down. The guy was very respectful and announced everything he was going to do before he did it.
No hassles whatsoever really. They were pretty thorough with the bags but everyone was nice and there was never a sense of interrogation.
It was really slow when I went through so it might be different if there are huge lines.

Just curious if the genital touching stories are true.... which I'd be fine with if they were all attractive females.

And there's the close minded statement of the week.
I could easily suggest that by allowing someone to treat you as 'guilty by default' is an attack on your dignity, and that you should 'suck it up' and refuse to participate.
You get to make that decision for yourself and nobody should be attacking you for it. The fact that you've chosen "option a" doesn't mean that "option b" is wrong or that those that choose "option b" are in any way inferior or need to "suck it up".

Really that upsets you? You know the reason right?
Though if you were flying to the States directly from one of those airports you should have had to remove your shows as it is a requirement when flying to or from the states. If the security didn't have everyone remove their shoes the security was not following protocol. I'd much rather have them follow protocol, no matter how absurd it may seem, than not at all.
I flew back and forth from Boston every week (arrive in Boston Monday depart Friday) for 6 months. I got to know the security guards as I usually chatted with them for a while before I was allowed to go through to the gate. One day I set off the detector (likely me belt I had forgotten to remove like I usually did). The security guard says "that's fine we know him let him through". This was after 9/11 and of course Boston Logan was one of the airports the planes were hijacked from.

The pat downs are always same gender.

Just around the area, my genitals were not directly touched. And it wasn't a hot female. He looked kind of like an older, fatter, balder Matt Stajan.

We're talking about removing your shoes here, not attacking your dignity. If you think removing your shoes is an attack on your dignity you obviously think too highly of yourself. I'm not surprised that's the case with you.

With the American economy in the toilet, you'd think they'd be taking actions to entice, rather than deter visitors.

It doesn't upset me, but contrast that to places like Europe and you can't help but laugh at just how absurd it has become.
Now what the guy at Logan did for you is downright scary.

Again, let me explain this. I find being charged as guilty by default to be an attack on my dignity (and everyone else's for that matter). You apparently don't feel as strongly about it as I do.......whoopie for you.
Again, let me explain this to you again as well......Just because you can't grasp or appreciate another person's perspective, doesn't give you carte blanche to mock them and demean their point of view. It's not my fault you can't grasp another person's point of view.

Wait, are you seriously saying that being asked to remove your shoes at a security screening results in you feeling as though you have been "charged as guilty by default"?? What about having to go through a metal detector? What about having large bags checked when entering a sporting event?
There's a point when security screening can become offensive to personal dignity and beyond the realm of acceptable and required security measures, I'd accept an argument that the recent use of pat downs does just that, but the removal of shoes? No, sorry, that doesn't come close to crossing any reasonable line.

I find it funny that you'd "Accept an argument" about patdowns, like you're some sort of judge or authority. What you're now clearly saying is that the point is perfectly valid, but that YOU get to decide for everybody when that threshold is reached. You have the nerve to suggest that I think too highly of myself? Look in a mirror bub.
When I go through US security, I almost always feel as though I'm being forced to prove my innocence. I understand why they've taken a particular stance, but to me the requirements to prove my innocence (the shoes, the pat downs, the scans, putting up with the attitude.....ALL OF IT) simply isn't worth it.
And again with your crappy comprehension. Where does this idea of removing shoes become the lynchpin to your argument. I haven't ONCE mentioned shoes until now. Go ahead, check. Not once. I've been CLEARLY talking about the experience of going through security the whole time.
If YOU think it is worthwhile, YOU can continue to participate. I don't think you're any better or any worse for doing so.
And for the third time, let me explain this to you again as well......Just because you can't grasp or appreciate another person's perspective, doesn't give you carte blanche to mock them and demean their point of view. It's not my fault you can't grasp another person's point of view.

There are ignorant and polite airport security and Customs staff everywhere. Had a laugh with a Customs guy in Minneapolis - I was behind an absolute stunning blonde chick. Turns out she was on the same flight from London and going to Calgary. When my turn came, he asked if I was travelling with her. I know you are not supposed to joke with Customs, but I couldn't help but reply, "I wish". He laughed, stamped my passport and told me I had 8 hours in the airport to make it happen.
