I played a high school basketball game against the Calgary Stampeders and tried to box out Stu Laird.
I woke up in the school nurses outfit and had to get 5 stitches in the back of my head.

Not really an embarassing story, but after the US vs Finland and Canada vs Slovakia semifinals at the 2010 Olympics, my friend and I were walking around the Vancouver airport waiting for our flight back to Calgary.
We went by one of the security checkpoints and Scotty Bowman walks by. I turn to my friend and say, "That was Scotty Bowman." He says, "No way man, let's go get a picture."
At first I said no, I didn't want to bug him or whatever. But my friend convinced me otherwise by saying, "Dude, how often are you going to get the chance to meet Scotty ****ing Bowman?"
We basically sprinted through the airport to catch up to him, Scotty moves so fast for an old guy. When we finally did, I was so out of breath, I approached him and chatted for a minute. Asked if he wouldn't mind taking a quick picture, and he obliged. He did not accept my offer of 1/2 my yearly salary to come work for the Flames.
1,248 coaching wins, 12 Stanley Cup rings, and a classy guy.

This story goes waaay back. It happened to a friend of mine. Rocket Richard was reffing a local minor hockey game (He doesn't remember what the occassion was, he was probably only about 7 or 8) and dropped the puck for a face off. My friend was taking the faceoff, and before Richard dropped the puck he says "now go and score a goal". My friend wasn't a shy kid and said "I already did". Same kid was at a dairy bar in Windsor On, and Gordie Howe comes in and sits at a stool beside him and his Dad. My friend was a Canadiens fan at the time and hated Gordie (elbows) Howe, so he paid no attention to him. After a bit Howe looks at him and says "Do you play hockey", kid says "Yep". Howe says "Do you know who I am?", kid says "Yep". Howe says "Do you want my autograph?", kid says "No". Not too exciting, but kids are honest eh? and God I feel old.

In 2009, a good friend of mine named Lianne was at the back alley with a few friends. She's a gorgeous girl and guys buy her drinks all the time. She was at the bar waiting for a friend to get out of the washroom and apparently this guy shorter then her tells her he wants to buy her a drink. She says thanks but no thanks and walks away.
About 20 feet later her friend asks her, "You know that was Mike Cammalleri, right?"
And that was her only chance at sleeping with a millionaire, so far.

It was the summer of 2008, I went with a bunch of friends to a buddy's bachelor party event at the paintball place out by Bragg Creek, and after we finished our game and about to take off our coveralls, we saw the Flames prospects walking in after they finished their game too. It was probably for a rookie camp team builder or something. I remembered vividly seeing Backlund and Boyd, and a bunch of no names, and Darryl. We challenged them for a game of paintball but all of a sudden a hailstorm started and the paintball place decided to close for the day. So unfortunately we didn't get to face off against the Flames prospect, because we were going to kick their butts!

I was downtown in Calgary last summer and waiting for the valet guy, while I was leaving a hotel, so I could ask him to bring my car up.
A blacked out Range Rover pulls up and parks right in front. A huge guy wearing a hat gets out, and my dad goes up to him and says, "Excuse me sir", and tries to hand him the valet ticket." The guy looks at him all confused and not very happy. I noticed what was going on and went "Holy ****, that's not the valet guy, that's Brian McGrattan."
I immediately went up, shook his hand, apologized, and told him I was a big fan.

I've met Phaneuf a few times while working at a building supplies store here on PEI. Any time he would come in, one guy that worked with me would always let me know as I am one of a few Flames fans on PEI. This day he happened to have Elisha Cuthbert with him, which was always a bonus.
Anyway, we had an older woman that worked there that couldn't care less about hockey and when one of the other employees asked her where I was, she replied that I went to see some stupid hockey player with a weird name. Little did she know that Dion and Elisha were the next customers in line at the cash. They both looked to pretend they didn't hear what she said but others around said there was no way they didn't hear her.
Anyway, just thought it was a funny story. I've heard so many Phaneuf stories here on the island that I'm not sure which to believe but I was there for this one.

As a preface, I'm not much of a storyteller, and this isn't that embarassing to me. But I went to high school with Dany Heatley, and I remember once I was walking home from school and he almost hit me with his car while I was crossing the street. He didn't even notice or anything, thought it was a bit ironic.

I was in the basement of a very greasy edmonton establishment with 1 Albert Dwayne Roloson, 1 former Flames Captain Todd Simpson, and the Trailer Park Boys...no joke...
I witnessed Roli the Goalie call Todd gay about 50 times, about 20 different ways, put in a HUGE dip of Redman, spill some beer on himself, and leave with two of the ugliest 18 year old bar stars I'd ever seen.
It was funny, Jean Paul Tremblay (Julian) was pretty cool, likes hockey alot, Leafs fan though (obviously). Talked with him for almost 2 hours.

1) I think I was flying to Toronto and has missed my connection so Air Canada bumped me to another flight and moved me up to first class. I sat down beside some short but pretty wide black dude and didn't really think much of it. When we were getting off the plane a guy asked me if I got his autograph. I asked him who it was and it turns out it was Nigel Dawes.
2) When I was living in Winnipeg, my neighbour was some old dude who was relatively nice and used to talk hockey with me quite a bit. One day he's like, since you're a hockey fan I gotta show you my collection of hockey stuff. So anyways I go in this guys house and down to his basement and it's just covered from ceiling to floor with hockey memorabilia. It turns out it was former New York Rangers captain Don Raleigh.
3) I lived three houses down from Iggy for about 4-5 years. Nothing really funny happened but the guy is just a class act all the way.

You woke up in a nurse's outfit?
That is pretty embarrassing.

I've met many NHL players but not very many embarrassing stories.
Perhaps the best would be as a kid in the early 90s after a game at the Dome my friend and I were lining up for autographs from the visiting Kings afterwards. The most coveted autograph was Gretzky's but the team was in a rush to catch their bus so he only signed a few. Because I didn't get an autograph I just reached out with my sharpie and slashed a big black line down his suit as he rushed by.

Quite a few years ago a friend of mine and myself were in Dryden (not far from here and Chris Pronger's home town) visiting some family. We ended up at a bar with some friends and we were having a few drinks, my friend is a pretty big guy but he's an idiot when he drinks. We saw Chris Pronger talking to some girl land she didn't seem to interested in talking to him so my friend said something to Pronger... Things really didn't go well, they ended up going outside and my friend got the crap beaten out of him. When he sobered up the next day my friend realized what a jerk he was and that he deserved what he got, but he still to this day says with a smile that he fought Chris Pronger

Got an embarrassing one for both the players and myself I suppose. I'm originally from near Prince Albert Sk(name's embarrassing enough already lol!). My mother used to make me attend "God Rock"(anybody remember those? Pure torture). Anyway, the regulars there included Shane Willis, Steve Kelly, Chris Phillips, Dean McAmmond. Modano also made a few appearances. For the most part the guys would just go there looking for ladies(Willis). The hilarious part was McAmmond head-banging and rocking out the way true religious nuts do. Eyes closed, arms flailing around, and speaking in tongues. Most ######ed thing I'd seen in my life until that point(time and China has shown me so much more lol). Modano was one of those weirdos too. Lost all respect for him when he started crying during a ballad. Sorry to any religious people on here but, that was just too funny!

About 20 years ago, when I was dirt poor and parking for free at the curling rink on the other side of the Bow River and walking into the downtown, some Canada Cup pre-tournament games were in Calgary.
I was walking along the Bow River, contemplating another day of slavery, when out of the gloom, mist and heavy fog of a cold early morning emerges a man in a loose trenchcoat, a sad, defeated, wistful look across his face . . . . . . . Viktor Tikhonov, the great Russian hockey coach, wobbling from one heavy foot to the other., the weight of the world upon his shoulders.
Just him and me in the heavy fog . . . . passing ships. A glance of acknowledgemnt, no words exchanged.
And then he was gone, back into the fog, swallowed as though he were never there.
A very Russian, Dr. Zhivago, moment.
Another time, as the 1996 playoffs were underway, I was running along the Bow when Chris Chelios and his wife came running from the other way. Chelios gave me one of those "Don't say a frakkin' word to me" looks, which I honoured.
In fact, I've probably only spoken to an NHL'er once, Rick Tabarracci at an autograph table at the Saddledome. He was traded the next day.

In 2004 I was working in a Japanese restaurant in downtown Calgary. It had an open kitchen with a sushi bar/counter so the chefs could chat with the customers. One afternoon it was very slow with no customers. There was only the head chef and myself working for kitchen staff, and Marcus Nilson walks in and sits at the sushi bar. I should say that besides myself, all the kitchen staff were from Japan and had no idea about hockey. They had no name or face recognition of any players beside Iginla.
Anyway the head chef starts chatting up Marcus like he's any other customer. Asks him his name and where he's from. He says he's Marcus from Sweden. Then the chef asks him if he's in Calgary on business, haha. Marcus looked kinda shocked for a second then looks over at me and I just shrug my shoulders. Then he said "Actually I'm a hockey player." at which point I inform the head chef that he plays for the Flames. Then the chef says in broken English, "Ohhhh, so how is your hockey this year?" Both of us start laughing and he tells the chef that it's pretty good. It was really funny to see the shocked look on Nilson's face as he realized that this guy had no idea who he was and didn't know much about the Flames. The finished their convo in 2 different styles of slightly broken English and as he got up to leave the head chef said thankyou, and "Be careful, hockey is dangerous sport. Don't get hit by puck!" Marcus laughed it off and said thanks as he left. He actually seemed really nice and genuine, and was a pretty soft spoken guy. I was laughing from listening to them chat and totally forgot to ask for an autograph.
Also Iggy came there a couple times, and I'd just like to say he is as awesome as any story you've heard or encounter you've had with him. He was always really humble and nice to everyone and signed autographs for all the staff after he ate. Kudos again to the captain.
