Saw another beer thread but it was from 2008, wasn't sure to bump that or just make a new one. Guess which one I did.

Just bought these. The three smaller ones are a strong belgian beer, with heavy sediment. Also delicious. Quote from the beers wiki.

Loving the Belgium beer Delerium Tremens at the moment.

Delirium tremens is Latin for "trembling madness", commonly nicknamed "the DTs", indicating a violent sickness induced by withdrawal after alcohol abuse. Although it is commonly thought that sufferers hallucinate pink elephants, which may explain its use on the beer's label, the most common animals seen in delirium tremens hallucinations are cats, dogs, and snakes.

I was going to buy that but at first glance I thought the colour of the beer bottle was the colour of beer (white with black specks in it). This made me not want anything to do with it, but after looking at the pick its clearly just the bottle. I'm an idiot.

I had this at a beer tasting at Willow Park last week and drank another bottle on Saturday.

Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Brut.

Quebec brewery, 11% Champagne/Brut style Belgian strong ale.

It is so unbelievably good.

I have a question for the beer connoisseurs:

I like beer. But it took awhile to grow on me. I like the ####ty, generic beers, though. I've tried some good quality European beers but I didn't like them. I even hate some of the "higher end" generic beers, like Guinness.

Will good beer grow on me? Or am I doomed to cringe at the taste of the powerful bitterness that a lot of good beers (or at least the ones I've tried) have?

Yeah sorry about that, I originally intended it to discuss beers and where to buy in Calgary. Like the Kawa Espresso bar link is apparently an amazing place to get beer.

Kinda lost that point in my op.

Why waste your time trying to like something that you don't?

Hard to say.

I used to drink Kokanee on a regular basis and now I think it tastes like horse piss.

If you genuinely don't like beer then 4x4 is probably right, you're wasting your time.

If you like beer but just haven't grown to like good beer then I'd say wait a while, let your taste mature and maybe you'll come around.

My taste in beer can sometimes change from month to month or year to year. There are some premium beers that I used to love that I can't stand and some premium beers that I used to hate and now I love. But I pretty much hate all generic beers. I drink Canadian at Flames games when I have to and that's about it.

As of right now, I will always pay the extra dollar or two to get good beer from a microbrewery or the imported stuff. I can't even stomach Bud anymore it tastes so awful (and I watched Beer Wars). I occasionally buy 8 packs of Kokanee when I'm gonna get drunk and it is on sale for a good price.

Maybe try beers from places you know? I really like "Hop Head" from Tree Brewing in Kelowna BC. Yukon Red is another awesome beer. They're not so crazy tasting that you don't understand what it is, but you can most definately taste and appreciate a huge step up in quality from the likes of Molson, Kokanee, Bud, etc etc.

There's two different Beer fests coming up in Calgary.

Bottlescrew Bill's is a little pub behind the Palliser on the corner of 10 Ave and 1 St SW, and their Beerfest is in a couple of weeks on March 5: http://www.bottlescrewbill.com/

There's also the Calgary Beerfest at the Big 4 Building at the end of May: http://www.get-a-life.ca/calgarybeerfest/

The one in the Big 4 is a lot bigger, but otherwise they're basically the same: Different breweries set up displays and offer samples of their various beers (it's not free, you have to buy tickets and exchange the tickets at the booths).

It's a good way to expose yourself to a wide variety of beers if that's something you're interested in.

You know what beer is surprisingly awesome? The house beer at Michael's Pizza Restaurant on 10th Ave SE.

Was shocked at how good it was!

Isn't it just Kokanee Gold? I was there for lunch last week and had some pizza with a pitcher of Kokanee Gold. I think the other options were Grasshopper and Traditional.

A lot of people do say that about Kokanee Gold. And you're right Frank, that is my favorite Belgian Beer. The 10 to be specific, although I haven't tried the 12.
