And as much as puckluck and I are arguing, I have to agree with him on how the discussion has been quite good, so far.
And everyone is guilty of hiding on the internet behind a fake name and speaking their mind. It's what makes it great. And yes, I have spoken to my neighbors about the smell. They close the windows now.

It's common remarks like these from Calgarians which sort of tick me off.
I wonder how Southern Ontario and Vancouver adjusted?

Those comments are not common from Calgarians. Calgary has a very high international immigration rate too.
Immigrants to Canada typically locate in one of three places:
Quebec-Windsor corridor
Lower Mainland (Vancouver)
Calgary-Edmonton Corridor,
Not necessarily in that order.

You realize you are in turn stereotyping all of Calgarians by the words of one person, right?

Have you ever thought that maybe your wife liked the area and the people before you two got married? I'm assuming you live in Taravista or about 2 minutes away but everyone in Calgary knows that area is mostly East Indian. It's not like they all threw a moving in party when you guys got there and 50,000 East Indians moved in just to spite you.
Even before it was being built people were talking about it being a mostly East Indian community.

Here's what you do. Start at the beginning of the thread and pick out all the "racist" posts. Now count how many different posters made those. Then count how many posters said non-racist things. You'll find the ratio about 1:10. For every racist poster there are about 10 who aren't.
Also, remember that this isn't a Calgary only forum. Probably 10-20% of the posters don't reside in Calgary.
What you are doing is being just as stereotypical. You are taking an unfortunate view that some easterners have which is to lump all Westerners as racist hicks.
Frankly I find your generalizations to be nearly as offensive as some of the things said in this thread, by a very, very small number of posters I might add.
And I do think that Western Canada has a higher than normal amount of racist hicks compared to the rest of the country. From my experience the highers percentage are in small rural towns throughout BC, AB, SK and Manitoba. I say that from first hand personal experience living in small rural towns. That doesn't mean I assume everyone who grew up on a farm and wears wranglers is a card carrying KKK member.
Your assertion, based on a few ignorant posts on a message board, that you'll get chased down the street by an angry racist mod is truly offensive to me.

Pretty sure it isn't just Westerners that are fundamentally opposed to that. Most of what I've read in this thread suggest CPers don't want radical minorities to institute obviously discriminatory and archaic laws in our society.
|
I think this is a straw man.
The article you posted is talking about families who want to exempt their children from these two activities. They're not trying to institute their preferred system on everyone else.
For me it would be pretty stupid to spend time and effort trying to exempt my kids from music. But people do a lot of things that I think are stupid and a waste of time (and vice versa). But whatever. If they want to stunt their children's experiences in this area, that's their business.
I think the school would have a reasonable position that if they have to deploy additional resources to accommodate this request, then these families should open their wallets for it.

I was taking a leap in my post. Certainly not a strawman though. And I never said anything about instituting Sharia on everyone. I think it is absurd that even people "willing" would be subject to Sharia law. We have one set of laws for all citizens. Well, except for the French.
Either way my point is that it is a slippery slope. Where do we draw the line? At some point our government and society has to say "that's far enough" and tell people to just deal with it. Having your child learn music and associate with women is way past the line IMO.

If so, why are there so many posts claiming that they have to adjust to Canada if they want to live here?
It's never been an issue with Toronto, so why is it with Calgary?

If you were to post the same thread on a Toronto or Ottawa or Hamilton-centric message board (say a random Leafs, Senators, or London Knights fan forum), you would find a similar ratio of people making similar posts.
I guarantee it.

So in Toronto each immigrant group gets to institute their own set of law, customs, values and morals, even if they are archaic?
No.
What makes Toronto so successful is the balance between foreign cultures and our own. People in this thread are complaining about people bringing archaic and offensive customs to our country.
Want to cook with curry and worship a different religion? Sure, why not.
You want to discriminate against women, institute Sharia law and/or impose any other laws or customs that the rest of our society (including other immigrants like yourself) finds deeply offensive? Not a chance.

That's why you don't make assumptions from anonymous message boards.
People will speak "their mind" on the internet, but in real life I have NEVER had one racist remark said to me. Ever, and I was born and raised in Calgary.
And you're out to lunch if you think this happens only in Calgary.

I find it hilarious and sad that the bigots and racists of this thread justify their stances with proposing ridiculous statements like "everyone is inherently racist" and than think they're doing the world a justice by speaking their minds. If it makes you feel better when you go to sleep at night thinking that everyone is an ignorant and delusional as you, that's perfectly fine. Luckly for the rest of us we know that simply isn't true.
And curry is magically delicious.

Quite shocking all those racist crackers in Calgary would be willing to let a Muslim teach at one of our Universities.
