Default Ontario Police issue 211 Tickets for Driving Idiots on their Cells

Can't wait for this to start happening in Alberta. Actually when is it suppose to be in place here?

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2.../17199341.html

"People behaved themselves for a while" after the legislation was implemented, he said, but they quickly slipped back to old habits.
Villamere said drivers were caught with a phone to their ears or texting while behind the wheel by officers were dressed as hydro workers and by uniformed officers during the blitz.

I wish the police could do to cell phones what they did with illegal radar detectors.

Really? that would be awesome and hilarious. And i'm sure Telus, Bell, and Rogers would totally support that.

How many on-duty Ontario Police officers were ticketed for using their radios or in-car Toughbooks while driving?

I have tried the whole hands free thing and found it to be much more of a distraction that holding the phone to my ear. I might be 1 in a million however I got way to comfortable with the hands free and zoned into my conversation to much. When I hold a phone to my ear I seem to be more alert.

I was wondering if they were actually implementing this law as I see easily 20 people breaking it on my way home from work every day.

You need a car with the built in blue tooth.

IMO, it should be like the way they can do 24 hour license suspensions. Get caught using the phone while driving = your phone confiscated for 24 hours. They wouldn't even have to fine anyone. Just losing the phone will drive most people over the edge.

hands free is just as dangerous. this is the greatest myth going around these days. its not the holding of the phone to your ear, its the conversation. *sigh*

No. but the 3rd party ones aren't half as good as the stuff built into your steering wheel. and i won't buy another vehicle without that option.

I guess if it's the conversation that's the problem, then I can't have any passengers. Or at least I have to drive in total silence.

Maybe all cars need to have a built in cellphone jammer.

Once you close the door you use your connection.

They could consult with elevator companies

I totally agree though.

It has nothing to do with holding your phone. It is the fact that you get lost in conversation.

I'm sure there are thousands of accidents per year because of people not paying attention because they're talking to a fellow passenger or looking out the window at something.

But for some reason people have chosen to target cell phones, instead of safe all-around driving habits.

It is no different that lighting a smoke, changing radio stations, changing CDs and a million other things people do when driving. Now some of those things take 2seconds while a convo probably lasts 30s at minimum and probably lasts quite a bit longer on average.

Because of Tards who text when they drive. Although alot of these people can't drive properly anyways even without a cell.

I have blue tooth built into my car, it's awesome, and I don't get distracted at all while talking on it. A big problem with driving while using a cell phone is texting. It's unreal how many people feel the need to text while driving - far worse than talking on it.

Not really the same thing IMO, because your passenger sees what you see, and they respond accordingly. Someone on the other side of the phone has no idea what you're doing.

there are studies that prove its the convo not holding the phone, yasa.

and yes, if you have a car load of passengers that can be dangerous too

This again?

Talking to a passenger is typically not nearly as distracting as talking to someone on the telephone. Simply put, your passenger knows when to shut up.

Your passenger is another set of eyes on the road and can see when conditions change or when you are going to perform a relatively difficult maneuver (like turning left at a busy intersection as opposed to coasting along a road with light traffic) and can take those cues to suspend the conversation for a moment. The person you are talking to on the phone can't see this and you will typically devote your attention to that conversation more than you should.
