Only 5-10 extra minutes on the morning rush commute from Varsity to DT. The real battle was the hour I spent shoveling my driveway and front steps this morning...

I'm staying home. Could I make it in? Sure. But frankly I can work from home and do everything here that I would be doing there...except fighting traffic both ways and wasting an hour or two!

Walking today was the only time I have ever pondered buying snow shoes in the 7 years I have lived in this city.

I drove my wife to work, and from Tuscany to Glamorgan was slow but steady and it maybe took 10 or 15 minutes longer - I thought that was pretty good. The sidestreets, alleys, and parking lots are VERY deep, but the main roads seem to have been taken care of a bit and are packed down.

There sure is a lot of snow though, and it is supposed to continue throughout the day.

Deerfoot south past Southland was a complete mess.

I'm not looking forward to the drive home.

Holy hanna... I came the closest I've ever been to getting into an accident this morning. Had a great, leisurely drive into work following a sanding truck until I got to 32nd and Barlow when some asshat came out of nowhere either running a red light or turning on a red advanced turn, in any case, very much in the wrong, and I had to swerve to narrowly avoid him. I was shaking so badly when I finally got the car parked at my office..

I could get around a lot faster if more people could figure out where the lanes are. It's pretty easy. If you see four ruts don't drive in the middle two.

So according to Environment Canada:
"Winter storm warnings are issued when a snowfall of at least 25 centimetres is expected in 24 hours, or snowfall of at least 10 centimetres when combined with blowing snow reducing visibility at times."
Let's hope it's issued because of the later!

I was out the door at 6:00am and one of the first cars on my side streets. I nearly got stuck coming to a complete stop in my complex even with Nokian Hakka R winter tires. I had to slightly back up and then go forward there was that much snow. I can't imagine people trying to get around in all seasons.

I love driving to work at 6am. No traffic troubles. It's a little slow going of course, but it's relatively low stress. I can imagine there are probably a lot of people sitting in traffic at the moment.

In my four-wheel drive Subaru with all-seasons, I was fine. The west hill area of town was already pretty snowy/icey based on last week's thaw/freeze cycle, so a bit of snow actually ADDED traction. Otherwise, a bit frustratingly slow on the drive in, but nothing insane.

Nothing too bad today, though the Eastbound exit to Glenmore off Northbound Deerfoot was a mess to get into. Lots of snow built up where you're supposed to exit, causing me to fishtail badly. All that fluffy snow makes for good traction where I needed it.

Drove the woman to work this morning. From Marda Loop to DT and back took an hour and 40 minutes, not including coffee stops.

My car is a beast and got to school by 6. Yokohama tires ftw.

Granted I was driving before the rush hour. Deerfoot was rough to go on Northbound. So I imagine it's a nightmare.

I laugh at PIMking's genius observation that 4x4 doesn't help. I sure as hell wasn't slipping around this morning. The vehicles without 4x4 were. Forget about stopping for a second, bumper to bumper traffic in snowy conditions is exacerbated by 2 wheel drive vehicles not being able to take off. No big deal, of course... Just pointing it out because I think PIMking has no clue what he's talking about. If everyone in Calgary drove Subarus and trucks, traffic on days like this would be as normal as any other day.

Don't be offended, car people. I'm not actually suggesting that you buy trucks for the few days a year that 4x4 helps. I actually appreciate your compactness the other 350 days per year when you're taking up less parking space, and I'm pretty jealous of your ability to zip around on nice days.

^I totally agree, I thank the good lord that I bought a vehicle with four wheel drive. I don't skid or slid, but I see a lot of cars around me doing it.

Drove the Ms. to work this morning, Kingsland to DT. 3 light wait without moving on NB 1st SW under the train underpass. There was a minivan struggling to get up the northside of the train underpass. Another minivan struggling to stay in his lane on Macleod SB, at the bend by Talisman. When the lanes are not apparent, it doesn't mean you can just drive wherever you want! Ahhhh, I hate strugglers and BMW drivers that don't signal!

I turned off 17th ave onto 1st st on the dot of 8 (QR was just starting their news update), and finally got past the underpass at 830.

I should put a caveat on that. Once realising that the traffic wasn't going to move, I pulled into the left lane passed the minivan and continued to turn right on 9th. I would have been there forever if the bus didn't block traffic in the left lane, allowing me to proceed. I was driving a FWD, underpowered, heavy sedan, with good winter tires being the key.

Compactness and zippiness in snow or sun! (^ and no signalling required!)
