So, uhhhh... why does the CRTC still exist again?

It seems all they do is be the lap dogs of the incumbent big TelCos, and then get bitch-smacked down by the government when people scream about their BS decisions.

I seriously wouldn't be surprised to find out that CRTC decision-makers receive some nice, lavish "presents" from Bell, Shaw, Rogers, Telus...

Dump the dinosaur, they are USELESS and in fact WASTE our tax money.

If other ISPs are not forced to have this practice as well, then it will eventually come down to the market deciding if Shaw is charging too much for overages (or has too low of caps).

I would be happy with either.

Absolutely. Shaw can go ahead and keep the caps if they can't impose the same rules on the competition. Ten bucks says they don't though.

It came up earlier in the thread, but this is one of those industries that needs a little shot in the arm from outside of this country. The current arrangement isn't working, and if the CRTC is influenced by the old boys club to such a degree, some real competition from the outside appears overdue.

We've got most of the country's broadcasting, cable, telephone, wireless, and internet all rolled up into a group primarily made up of 4 companies.

To be fair, they also overruled the CRTC when it ruled Wind couldn't launch because Telus and Rogers cried about it.

I just hope they completely eradicate the CRTC now, as it is showing on a consistent basis it is a dinosaur that is completely out of touch with consumers, and is more interested in protecting the large companies and not the consumers.

The optics and the economics were just too bad to ignore for the government.

Most important was that the last mile was basically built out with public money, you had huge corporations then dictating how that public funded infrastructure would be used to the detriment of everyone but themselves.

That and the overages would thousands of times the marginal cost of supply. Would not be possible to charge that in a real competitive market. Government's hands were basically tied.

Too late. Shaw has lost a pile of customers. Every person I know is either leaving shaw or has switched. I know Shaw did what was necessary for their bottom line, but sometimes bad publicity is just bad publicity. Telus did the right thing and waited.

As for Shaw, I'm done with them. Just waiting until I have a bit of time to go through the process of changing providers. Shaw will have to give me one sweet deal for me to stay on as a customer.

Only if they can't, or refuse to, read.

A knee jerk reaction to switch to Telus, based on UBB alone, would be pretty foolish (although there are many other reasons why it might be a valid choice).

It is a valid choice. Higher cap (125gigs) and package deal that cost just as much as Shaw's high speed alone. Why wouldn't people switch?

Does not compute. Cheaper and Telus never said they'd adopt the UBB model, double cheaper.

Well think about it. How long do you normally stay with your provider? 2 years? 3? That's the length of their contract. I don't have a problem with that since I usually stick around for a few years.

Plus first full year paying $30 a month for the package sealed the deal.

I'll give you the dolphines...####ing dolphines.

Kevin O'Leary is a pig. Pure and simple. I was trying to force choke him thru my monitor by the end.
