What I am wondering, and have been all day, is how are they distinguishing who is on Mubareks "security squad" and who is an anti-government protester?
By the type of skins they carry or fancy hats they wear:

Yup...it was blatently and obviously orchestrated.
One of the commentators over there said earlier that he was told by someone that any government worker who wanted to be paid this weel was made to go down and join the pro-mubarek side and then report back to their offices afterwards to collect.
The suspicious intelligence guessing monkey brain in my head wonders if Mubarek uses the next 7 months to consolidate his hold on the army, purge disloyal officers and consolidate his hold on the government and prepare for the protests when he tells average Joe Egypt to screw off, and warns of the dire consequences of public protest.
He's got a son to employ after all.

Thats what seems like hes working towards. Tell the people you've heard their demands, and to go home in the name of stability. Spend the next 7 months digging in and rig the september election.
I'd love to hear a Western nation come out and say it like it is about Mubarak instead of this tippy-toeing that is currently going on. Honestly, it's kind of embarrassing.

Talk is cheap. The US Government urged Iraqis to rise up and overthrow Sadam after the first Gulf War. He just crushed the uprising, and further entrenched himself.
Unless someone is prepared to put some boots on the ground, which they aren't, then sabre rattling may just make things worse for Egypt in the long run.
Seems it was the military that was shooting into the air to try and intimidate protesters, not surprisingly. Anti-Mubarak protesters have pushed back pro-Mubarak supporters and have taken an important overpass. They've captured some alleged Mubarak collaborators.
