Default To all the macho men with 4x4s...

Question. Do you drive with it on all the time in the winter?

I was driving with someone today that had it on the whole time... even on just wet pavement.

Personally, i normally just use it either starting off from a light, or if im stuck.

just curious to know youre 4 wheel drive tendancies.

Only if it is icy or there is deep snow.

I like it when it is icy because I have a standard so I can use the engine to slow down as well as the brakes.

When my dad had one he rarely used it, only if he was stuck or the ground was ice/really bad.

I only use it if the roads are quite snowy, otherwise it's typically off. It's fun to drive in rear wheel only when it's a bit slippy out

I only use it on ice and deep snow, my girlfriend uses it all the time when its sloppy out. It annoys me when I get in and its still in 4x4 and the streets have been dry for days.

I just leave it in auto in the winter or if the weather is nice like a week and a half ago I change it back to 2wd.

Depending on the vehicle, you could be doing damage to your drive train. In some cases there is a 60/40 ratio on the rear tires to front tires. So driving on dry pavement will cause premature wear on the tires and stress on the drivetrain.

As long as the wheels are the same diameter its not an issue. But that also means you need to rotate your tires so the tread depth is uniform all the way around.

Don't run 4X4 on good traction.

You're diff's are trying to turn all the tires the same, unless you're driving in a straight line you are wearing on the clutch plates, diff's and or transfer case. On ice, the tires can slip reducing the wear.

four, eight, or sixty four wheel drive isn't going to help anyone on ice.

Really? I doubt you've driven a 4x4 if you say that. Mine sure helps on ice. It doesn't help me stop on ice, but it helps me take off and it helps when I'm turning on ice.

Studded Winter Tires + 4X4 = Safer Winter Driving

I don't see why it's considered "macho" to have a 4X4 when you live in a place that has winter like Calgary. Especially if you work outside or live rurally.

Snow tires is the most important thing.

I have no idea if he was right, but my dad always told me he only used 4x4 sparingly since it reduces fuel economy. Either way, the best reason not to use it all the time is so you know what is happening with the road. Use it when you need it.
