Default New Dog

I am getting a puppy over the holidays and I am having trouble thinking of a good name. Left to my own devices in the past, I named my pet rabbit "Bunny," my pet hamster "Hamster," and my pet turtle (and this is where i got creative) "Mr. turtle." I know you guys are fairly clever so I thought I would ask for suggestions.

Considering the formula so far, is "Doggy" not the best??

Sorry, had to....

Anyhoo, what kind of dog? If it attacks you when your back is turned, "Bert" would be adequate.

Any hobbies or preferences you have?

Always found Native names fascinating... "Born with a Tooth" or "Big Snake", etc... as I believe they named their youth based on what they first saw after the baby was born.

Or horses, where anything goes.

Dog names are usually a one word name. Be unique.. if it howls a lot badly, name it "Ashley Simpson". If it whines all the time, the single word "Gretz" fits. If it does nothing but lie, "Paul Martin" works.

In tribute to "The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe" you could name it Aslan.....

My former pet names have been:
Si (pronounced sigh)
Sage
Cain
Kon
Mini
Nelson
Rook
Page

maybe that would help.

Figure out what kind of personality the dog has....that usually helps.

If your dog is pretty lethargic, calling it Skippy probably wouldn't fit...unless you're pretty sarcastic.

In all seriousness, I considered calling him that. Actually, first I considered "puppy" but then I figured that he deserves a better name than that.

As for my hobbies or preferences ... I like hockey and the Flames thus I was thinking maybe something flames related or just hockey related.

Although I must say, I liked the suggestion of Aslan, from the Narnia series.

As for what breed, he's a golden retriever.

Keep it simple. They respond better to simple commands. If you choose a long or complicated name, you'll end up shortening it anyway. People names work well, I've found. Jake, Charlie, and Ruby were three of my favorite dogs of all time.

Turk's a golden retriever. I'm a big fan of them. My buddy named his dog "Damon" after the Red Sox Johnny Damon. Watching a game at his place a few months ago everytime Damon would go to the plate my friend would turn to his dog and say "hey hey hey now, pay attention this is important!"

You could call him Kipper, that wouldn't be a bad name for a dog. Afro, Gelly, Iggy, Dion (or Double Dion), Kinger, Flame, Vernie, Lanny, Captain Craig, just throwing a few nic names out there, even from days past.

Hope that helps.

I named my retriever Abbey in honour of the Beatles (favourite band). I would go with something that fits into your hobbies or lifestyle as well. That being said if I had gotten a male I probably would've named him Angus. I'll try to think of some hockey related names if I get a chance. Remember to have a very short name that you have no problem yelling out. Anymore than two syllables will be hard for the dog to distinguish. If it's a longer name on paper make sure that it has some shortened form for everyday use. Also I would avoid having a name that sounds similar to any command that you might train .

Anyway have fun with your pup once you get him. My god goldens are an active breed when they're young (mine is just over 6 months right now). . . you're in for the ride of your life. My dog has more energy than batman and superman combined. It is essentially impossible to get her tired. That being said she's been awesome and it's been a ton of fun watching her grow and develop.

I just remembered a friend of mine named his dog Dammit. Worked well consider how well trained the dog was.

Call him dog. "come here dog", "good dog", "what's your dog's name? 'exactly.'"

I have always been partial to "Askim"

Screws everyone up when they ask the dogs name, and you say "Askim"

And considering your penchant for the Flames,
"Yeller" would be good, especially as he ages!!!

"Goldie" (golden reference, also a similar colour to the Flames jersey)
"Red" (ditto)

But I think I would go with....

"Sutts"

Unique, and a shortened form of Sutter.

Without actually knowing you, it's hard to think of a name. Some people like to name their dogs "human" names, and some prefer more dog-specific names. Do you have a preference?

Also, if you are into a specific kind of music, you might want to gear the name in that direction. For example, a girl I know just named her new dog "Axel" as in; Axel Rose. It's not my thing, but if you knew her, it is perfect.

Some random names I like are; Specimen B, Fuzzy, Loki, Saboteur, Big Cheese, A-U (sounds like "Hey You").

How about "vernon" or "chopper"

Those are both good dog names and Flame related.

I have a Golden named Keeper.

With great irony, she was named Keeper by her previous owners who gave her up to us at one year of age.

And we have another Golden named Abby.
