seems to me that this employee should also take part of the responsibility. Who in their right mind would want to do this?
did the owner leave the guy a note saying:
Joe, please complete the following tasks this week:
1. Wash floors
2. Clean up shipping area
3. Slaughter 100 dogs
4. Take in my dry cleaning
5. Rearrange unused sleds

I think you're comparing apples to oranges.
I would bet these are 100% working dogs that have spent 95% of their life chained to a post in the ground.
The couch isn't big enough for 1-200 dogs

My point is there's a difference between how the true working sled dogs are kept.....
...with little or no human interaction.
And how recreational sled dogs are housed. They tend to be more like a breeders set up. With indoor and outdoor kenneling.
The owners and employees will bring one or two dogs at a time into their homes. And will rotate the animals so they are very compatible with humans.
Beyond that my overriding point was, didn't these dogs at least deserve a chance to live out their lives.

Even though these were working dogs, it's not uncommon to "retire" them to families as pets.
Hell, they could've even promoted them as "Olympic memorabilia". I'm sure they would have people willing to get the dog for free and just have to pay the transportation.

I could probably have found a home for one of them if I had heard about it.

That's just it. Out of 30 million people in Canada (and even more if you count our neighbours in parts of the US as well as other Nordic/Scandinavian countries who share sled dogs as part of their culture), getting 100 dogs adopted wouldn't have been impossible.
The media would have latched onto the story, animal adoption groups would have jumped on board, companies would have contributed logistical assistance, etc. Shooting them was a chicken#### move and was completely unnecessary.

Seems like CP would have an uprising if they knew how many animals were euthanized every day.

There's a difference between euthanizing a pet and taking Ol' Roger to the back shed and blowing its brains out.

I totally agree. Whining after the fact doesn't help anything...dude should have piped up before he killed them.

A .22 in the head is pretty humane IMO, if done properly the dog wouldn't even hear the bang.
But anyhow, I wonder how many pet dogs are put down everyday in Calgary, know what I'm sayin ?

You should maybe try and find a definition of euthanasia.

A .22 in the head is humane? Are you effin crazy? So is beheading people on death row humane? because they might not feel anything?
Don't you think the most humane way would be to give the dog a needle so they peacefully fall asleep?
And who cares about pet dogs, is that what this story is about? Has nothing to do with whether or not shooting one hundred dogs is the right way to do things.

I just read an article last week about it.
It was like 240 dogs last year.
not much at all considering how many dogs there are in this city.

Did you miss your own article you posted that said that some dogs were still alive when they were getting buried? and i'm sure all his dog buddies are freaking out when the guy is going one by one shooting them. you know they have eyes and ears.

Quick and painless is how I want to die, I think that is humane.

It isn't as peaceful as you think.
Skip this part if you easily get sad.

I'm not defending what this company did, however I find it interesting how much compassion people have for dogs that are likely unfit as pets, at the same time their local SPCA is putting 1,000's of pets down locally.

So 140 more than that company, 240 dogs wouldn't be too many for a city of a million to adopt either. How many cats did they put down ? 1000 ?

Do people not see a difference between shooting a dog and humanely euthanizing a dog?
Feels like i'm talking to a wall. How do we know what someone feels after being shot in the head? did that politician who got shot in the head feel any pain? what if she died 30 seconds after being hit? not everyone who gets shot in the head dies a peaceful instant death.

I thanked your post. I grew up on a farm, so yes, I can (and have) seen the difference.

I think the thing that stuns me isnt even the cruelty, I can deal with that more or less, its the complete and utter disregard to any measure of decency or value of life.
I mean, they brought these dogs in, made cash hand over fist using them, these dogs helped entertain thousands of people and as soon as it was all over were casually and cruelly discarded.
And the thing is, its not like they didnt know an impending 'downturn' in the tourism industry was coming. Olympics come with handy 'end' dates, everyone knows when they finish. When they're over, the tourism boom that came with them ends too. No plans or contingencies or anything were made.
The dogs became inconvenient and so were disposed of with no concern or care as to how. Its all really inhuman.
