Phoned Rogers a bit ago. Got 40 bucks off my monthly plan (from near 90 to 50) with barely asking or saying a thing. Just made sure to speak to retentions.

Hardest part was waiting for 40 minutes on hold. Was ridiculous...but I didn't even have to try to get that much off of my plan.

Just tried retentions for first time today, about 8 calls in total for this:

$35
unlimited daytime, eve, etc
1000LD

$10Value pack (voicemail, call id, 2500texts outgoing, unlim. incoming)

$2.58 charge

$30 6gb

-$15 toward package
-$10 toward value

52.58$ tax/month + tax

pretty ridiculous to be paying 90+ for so many years for such minimal plan.

Does anyone have the iphone value pack (fancy texts, voicemail and stuff)?

I'm wondering if its worth the extra 5 or 10$ to replace the current pack

God, some of the Rogers reps are so full of it. Just getting to retentions has been annoying ...

BS'ing sales reps not withstanding*, the retentions girl I finally talked to after 40 minutes offered a great deal (to me, but seemingly a standard retentions deal) without really doing anything**, so I re-upped.

I get:
-250 daytime minutes
-unlimited evenings/weekends from 6 pm
-Caller ID and Visual Voicemail
-6 GB data
-100 sent text messages + unlimited received
-100 canadian long distance minutes

Taxes in is about $53.00/month, which is just shy of $40 lower than my previous bill, without compromising anything I actually use. Finally, I got the go-ahead to drop by a Rogers store or an Apple store and pick up my iPhone4 (assuming I can find one) for the discounted price.

Whoop whoop!

* One sales guy actually told me he was "jealous" of my $92/month plan, giving me some sob story about how he's with Virgin Mobile and paying $50/month for "like nothing" and how it would cost him $120/month to get what I have. Every single one I talked to told me there was likely "nothing that can be done" about reducing my rate, then they tried to sell me something else!. What a crock of crap, but rather understandable--I probably should have just pressed the "cancel service" button instead ...

** For those like me who have no idea what to say, I mentioned I was interested in renewing my contract and wanted to see what they could offer me that was cheaper than what I currently paid, I also asked what my cancellation charge would be as I was considering other options. I said I thought I was paying for more minutes than I really used (true) and also I didn't really use nearly as many text messages as I had allotted (true), but said I liked the data plan (true). I asked her if there was some special plan I could get that wasn't on the web site that would be cheaper in those areas, and that's what got the ball rolling. I also rather innocently asked what the per-minute long distance charges was and managed to get the 100 LD minutes thrown in without a fuss.

This isn't a retention plan, just their limited time offer. So is this plan giving you unlimited data?

Love the small print...

"BlackBerry®, iPhones, and smartphones are not eligible."

I just bitched and moaned at Rogers and got the following:

iPhone 4 upgrade 18 months early.
unlimited voice
unlimited text
6 gb of data
visual vm
call display

$71/mth

With the 6 gb data plan, it is essentially a fully unlimited plan. 6 gb of data is near impossible to burn through considering I have wifi at home and work.

IMO it is as good a plan as you could ask for if you don't have a landline, which I don't.

I spoke with Telus a few days ago and they told me that a retention plan cannot go below $50 anymore for a smartphone. That doesn't sound right, especially after reading this thread.
Has anyone else been told that?

That sounds a lot like things I have been hearing about Shaw, Telus and Rogers. They are less and less likely to give huge discounts now.

That said, I got $20 a month knocked of both mine and my wife's plan just before Christmas due to the leverage Wind gave us. We are both below $50 now.
