Is this considered a pretty weak year for best pictures?
I've been kind of out of the loop, and of those nominated I've only seen Inception, Social Network, and Toy Story 3, and can't say any of them were particularly remarkable. If I had to pick one to watch again it would probably be the kids' movie.
Nolan not at least getting a nomination for Inception is absolutely ridiculous. The amount of stuff he would've had to deal with to shoot some of those scenes is wild.
I was hoping Paul Giamatti would get a nom for Barney's Version after winning the Golden Globe (comedy or musical). Hes excellent in it. Much better than Jesse Eisenberg, who has acted the same way in all three movies I've seen him in.
Its a travesty Anton Corbijn wasnt nominated for The American. Best film of the year.
Bold prediction:
What a craptastic year for movies. Inception was watchable, but that's it. I'd rather watch re-runs of Alf again than those so called masterpieces.
Well aren't you a bundle of joy??
No, there was no masterpiece that we're gonna be talking about in 20 years, but there's some solid options for Best Picture. Some great characters and amazing performances.
How can you say The Fighter was unwatchable?? How was Black Swan unwatchable?? King's Speech was very watchable, as was 127 Hours. And Inception was only watchable?? That's it??
I'd say this year is more interesting because of the parity of the movies. This has been my personal favorite movie year in a long time. I would suggest that if your idea of good movies is Iron Man, then you shouldn't click on the Oscar thread.
Films like Another Year, Blue Valentine and Winter's Bone don't need to cater to people who look at the titles and shrug. The Oscars have always been about elitism and the first step of joining the conversation is actually WATCHING the films.
Saw The Fighter last night, I thought it was really well done. Bale was really good.

So I've now seen all ten movies in the Best Picture category and Black Swan, Inception, and The Fighter are still my three favs.
I really enjoyed the last three I hadn't seen, Winter's Bone, The Kids Are Alright, and The King's Speech, but none of those films had best picture feel to them to be honest.
The King's Speech was an interesting and neat story, but it was mostly fluff as people have said. That doesn't take away from what a great job both Geoffry Rush and Colin Firth did.
The Kids Are Alright was a movie I was surprised by how much I liked it.. but the predictable love triangle just annoyed the piss out of me, they really should have/could have avoided that and made it a much better film. Mia Wasikowska was the best actor or actress in this film, better then Annette Bening who was nominated for an Oscar from this. Mia is a fantastic little actress I hope she gets more exposure soon.
Winter's Bone was... depressing, but good. It was just a random crazy story, but I enjoyed it. Jennifer Lawernce' Oscar nom is well deserved in it, she was in basically every seen I think and was totally believable throughout.
