A couple points, I still haven't seen The King's Speech, which leads Oscar Nominations. I wish Ben Affleck would have got a Best Director nomination for The Town, I thought he did a great job with that.
I thought this was the first year Pixar didn't dominate the animated film area. I thought both Despicable Me and How to Train Your Dragon were both better then Toy Story 3, upset Despicable Me didn't get a nomination for Best Animated Feature.

The only movie out of all of those that I've seen is The Town. I've got some catching up to do! I thought The Town was awesome though. Better than I was expecting, and I had pretty high expectations for it. I agree with you that it would have been nice to see Ben Affleck nominated for Best Director, but I thought Jeremy Renner was great too, and am glad to see he got a nomination.

I am True Grit biased for this list.. I thought that movie was so well done. Natalie Portman was unreal in Black Swan as well.
I will be shocked if Hailee Steinfeld doesn't win.

I agree about Despicable Me and How to Train Your Dragon. Two flicks I enjoyed a heck of a lot more then I expected.
Toy Story was good, not great. I think Black Swan, The Fighter and Social Network will clean up

Of all the films listed, i've seen two of them: Inception and The King's Speech. As you can tell, I am a huge movie buff.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for Winter's Bone. She made the film seem so real, it was almost sickening. The Academy sometimes surprises us by choosing Independent Film actors/actresses like Hillary Swank in Boys Don't Cry, etc.

Not at all surprised The King's Speech is on there.
Not a movie that will sweep up awards, but would like to see it pick up something because I think it was a brilliant movie.

Out of the 10 Best Film nominations I haven't seen three off them; The King's Speech, Winter's Bone, and The Kids are Alright. Right now the front runner for me would be Inception, and the one that shouldn't be there is Toy Story 3.
I'm going to try to "go to the theater" and see all three before Oscar night as I like to see all the films prior.
Thanks BigBrodieFan for the quick mention of Winter's Bone, I hadn't heard much about it prior so I'm definitely going to check it out.

What a black eye for the academy that they kept the 10 Best pic nominees.
Just an absolute embarrassment that Toy Story 3 is nominated, no matter how cute and touching of a movie it was, it is simply not worthy of being anywhere near BP.
It is actually amazing that either the Golden Globes or the Oscars are still relevant.
The HFPA is a total joke in Hollywood and everyone knows that the Academy voters take bribes and don't even watch half the movies.

Really? I thought it was because they were a bunch of conservative elitist snobs.

I like the expanded 10 films, gives myself and others an opportunity to hear about great movies we otherwise wouldn't have heard about perhaps.
As for your other points... yawn. It's fun to talk about, and interesting to discuss the "top" films of the year. No need to get into the policies that surround it.
Just wish comedies would get respect.

That is the whole point. How can you evaluate the "top" movies when the system that determines the top movies is totally flawed and corrupt.
Don't get me wrong I'm a movie buff and follow awards season pretty closely, especially since I'd love to see The Social Network sweep the major awards.
I'm just surprised that the Academy has been able to stay relevant in a drastically changing landscape in hollywood.

I'm always surprised how into these award shows people are. I love movies, but watching some borefest where a bunch of self-important drama-queens fellate each for 3 hours.....I just don't see the appeal. I tried one year, but lasted about 10 minutes before I had to bail. I'd rather use that time to watch a great movie!
I can only hope Ricky Gervais is hosting this one too.

I'm interested in the nominations and the winners, watching the actual awards ceremony is another thing. Thanks for a PVR the last 5 years I've widdled down the watching time from 3 hours to about half an hour.
Usually there is a couple movies or actors that I am really pulling for, and that's why I watch/pay attention.

If you really want to challenge the credibility of the Academy, all you need to write is "Shawshank never won a single Oscar".

These things are tough to comment on in all fairness unless you've seen all the films.
The King's Speech was a great film in my opinion and I would have no problem at all if it cleaned up. All three nominated performances were really strong.
I agree with MMF that Ben Affleck should have got a direction nomination for The Town. Scorsese won best director for The Departed, and as The Town is a similar kind of movie I think Affleck at least deserves a nomination. Glad to see that Jeremy Renner got a supporting actor nomination although I feel that Geoffrey Rush should win it.
For anyone who loved the King's Speech, I highly recommend seeing The Gathering Storm (a 1930's-set biopic of Winston Churchill) as I found both films similarly brilliant. Interesting to note Derek Jacobi appears in both (as PM Stanley Baldwin in The Gathering Storm and as the Archbishop of Canterbury in The King's Speech).

I am rooting for Michelle Williams in the lead actress category, she is a special talent. Although I bet Natalie Portman take it in a land-slide though. Pretty safe bet on Toy Story winning the animated category. I hope the Social Network takes best picture and Eisenberg takes lead actor.
