Good. Let's get rid of Maddow, Matthews, O'Reilly, Beck and Hannity while we're at it.

This pseudo-journalistic partisan idiocy must stop, and soon.

That's a stunner...he was pretty good for them when it came to ratings.

Though he is no different from the rest of the party shills on any network, he is a really intelligent and witty guy. He will land on his feet somewhere.

I hope he goes back to sports actually.

It's nice to see that ratings aren't the be all and end all.

This should also be a lesson regarding the true motivations of the narrowly owned mass media.

Keith Olbermann was MSNBC. The network will essentially not matter without him. It's quite obvious that Comcast hopes to silences the anti establishment voice with their merger with Universal. There's really no place for Olbermann to land on network TV.

I happened to be watching Countdown last night and was shocked at the announcement. However, on further reflection it shouldn't be that surprising that Olbermann was removed considering he was such a loud and fervent voice against the very people that cut his pay cheques, namely big businesses thriving at the expense of the middle class. The timing of the Comcast merger certainly seems suspicious.

I agree that he'll land on his feet somewhere. Regardless of your political leanings it's hard to argue against his talent. He has a large enough following that he'll likely be able to choose between two or three offers for his next gig. However, it will be interesting to see if he chooses to work again for a large corporation or perhaps do something completely different.

I didn't always agree with his views or his rhetoric but I was always entertained and often informed watching his show.

FNC should hire him. I do think this has Comcast written all over it.

On one hand I can see that - if you're part of the "news" you should probably go with full disclosure.

On the other hand - if my employer had this as a company policy, I would consider it a violation of my civil rights. Who I donate to is my business and my business alone.
It is almost certainly a condition of his employment contract - usually, corporate policies are included in employment contracts. If he didn't agree with that condition, it was his responsibility to negotiate it prior to signing the contract. You can't just decide to break a contract because you were stupid enough to sign it even though you don't like it.

A close friend and former colleague of Olbermann's at MSNBC, a guy who subbed on Countdown occasionally, was part of a panel discussion on Howard Kurtz's "Reliable Sources" yesterday morning.

Paraphrased, he said Olberman had been quaking a bit because the NBC news division, influenced by Tom Brokaw, was likely to be the beneficiary of the Comcast takeover and would likely be imposing their own, more traditional editorial standards onto MSNBC.

Olbermann, according to his friend, had been emboldened by the 250,000 people who had signed a petition a month or so ago demanding his reinstatement after a suspension for contributing to the campaigns of several Democrats without informing his bosses.

According to this chap, Olbermann had been effectively demanding to be free of Brokaw/NBC News editorial standards and probably overplayed his hand. That would fit with the general thought he's a bit of an egomaniac.

The NY Times on the weekend had a good piece on this saying something along the same lines, that Olbermann had been looking for an exit rather than face Comcast while, simultaneously, Comcast was living in fear it would have to be the company that turfed him once and for all after he went too far yet again.

So, a solution that fits all. There are no plans to replace him.

Interesting that he chose to get rid of his "Worst Person In The World" segment a week or so before he left. Maybe a last ditch effort to save himself.

The other interesting thing, his friend said, was the fact the entire Countdown organization was effectively taken down. It could have been left up and running with an alternate host but MSNBC decided not to do so.

I'm not 100% on this but I think it had something to do with the Tucson shootings and an effort to be less hostile in the aftermath. It's possible that his pledge to tone down his own rhetoric may have had something to do with an effort to save his job and that in turn led to the demise of the "WPITW" segment.

It was only a matter of time.

Comcast owns a part of Current, so he's pretty much working for NBC again
