The biggest laugh about this is that the CBSC is the industry-created regulator so that things like this didn't have to go the CRTC. And now the CRTC is saying "come on guys, really?"

I agree 100% with Rick. It's about context. But if you leave "context" up to a board, it gets fuzzy. How does the CBSC/CRTC know when to read something literally vs knowing that the words were from a supposed ignorant character? It's easier to say "these hateful words are not allowed". It's cut and dry and doesn't leave things up to a panel to decipher if something was meant to be hateful or not....

He is gay. He was on Strombo once and they discussed it briefly. I can't remember exactly what it was about, but I was a little surprised to learn that as well.

Back on topic, it is interesting that two fairly high profile gays (by Canadian standards, even though many don't know that Mercer is gay) have come out (no pun intended) against the CBSC ruling.
