They're not heavily enforced in any way.

That probably has to do with the discretion aspect of it. Technically the authorities would have to enforce it if a parent wanted to formally press charges.

Thank god I grew up in Canada, and got to lose my virginity legally.
I didn't realize America was run by Fox News, that law is absurd.

You know that farm animals aren't legal in the US or Canada, right?

It's interesting that until ? 50-60 yr's ago, parents would be happy to let their 13-15 yr old daughter marry an established 20-25yr old.

Nice one man. You got me there!
Now don't you have some kill traps to go setup for the cats in your neighborhood?

Too much control of young adults is in the hands of the parents. It's sad that a 17 year old can have his life ruined and have to register as a sex offender because of "over protective Dad". Especially in the very likely case that it was "over protective Dad's" daughter that could have initiated the physical relationship in the first place.

It probably depends on whether you see 16-17 year olds having consensual sex as a "problem."

Teenage pregnancy is not necessarily the easiest path for a young woman to take, but it is far from the end of the world. One of my closest friends was a mother when she was 16, and she turned out to be one of the strongest, most well balanced people I know, and her daughter could not be more loved or cared for. I'm not saying the situation was ideal, but she was able to cope with it more than capably.
I personally think that the choice should be up to the participants, not the people looking on from their ivory tower.

I understand this thread is in the "Off topic" Forum, but Justin Beiber and American Sex laws??? REALLY?!?!
and what's more, is why would your first instinct be to research american sex laws when you hear he has an 18 year old girlfriend?
Are you going to call the Police on Selena Gomez??

Hows this for freaky?

Based on that ridiculously stupid looking haircut its clear that Justin Bieber is in fact disguising a massive forehead. Were he to shave his head, would he in fact be Olli Jokinen?
