Really? That's your response? Hire more people to check tickets just because some people don't want to follow the rules? Is that what the world is coming to? Don't follow the law if no one is checking?
You do realize that the more people you hire to check tickets the higher the cost of the ticket.

One of the most absurd things you've written on this forum so far.
How can you even logically derive that rules should be broken simply because not enough people are enforcing them?
They also drive around and give tickets now? Are you referring to the Calgary Police or the Calgary Parking Authority? (Neither of which are Calgary Transit).

But, even if that was his excuse, he still would have done it knowing that the risk was there.

It's kind of ironic, the Peace Officer who gave me the ticket kept re-iterating that it isn't the worst crime in the world. Obviously a bunch of people disagree.

And you would be incorrect in that assumption. I have monthly transit passes going back to July but this month I have been spending a lot of time in the field and therefore didn't feel the need to purchase one as I'm only in the downtown office for about a week this month.
In any event, I went to the court house to pay the fine yesterday but they don't have it in their system yet.

Well, obviously, it's not the worst crime in the world, but you never see someone post a thread called "I killed a guy and now I'm on trial for murder. Is there a loophole that will help me get away with it?". So, you have to post a holier-than-thou "do the crime - do the time" rant somewhere.
Somehow I missed your second post. My rant was more against the attitude that puckluck expressed than yours. Obviously, the vigilante justice part wasn't serious.

Over those 6 months, you probably never saw a Transit cop once.
Isn't that always the way? "I drive this road every day and never see a cop. Since I'm running late, I'll speed just a little bit this one time." --- Lights and sirens. --- "FUUUUU!!!"

More like it's a free ride when you're already there I'd say...
But maybe he should have had one hand in his pocket while the other hailed a taxicab... Would have been cheaper.

So were you brutally molested while you waited in traffic jail?

I wonder how many people in here going on about being ripped off over a guy not paying for a transit fare have ever downloaded (not paid for) a movie, a song or borrowed discs from buddies to burn off?
Personally I do not take transit, it is a waste of car insurance.

On a similar note what are the odds of a full time U of C student who forgot his U-Pass (but paid for it and recieved it in early Sept with documentation and it was still valid at the time) getting at least a reduction on the failure to produce ticket?

I've heard that keeping your U of C ID, and showing it when asked with confidence tends to work fine. If they ask why the sticker is out of date, simply say you did not realize it was out of date, and that you will go get the new sticker the next time you are at the university.
Not saying I have ever done this however. Rules are meant to be followed....etc.

Wow, really? That sucks. I remember the crappy sticker that was on my Student ID. It's pretty common to have it peeled off around the edges. Mine was practically all scraped off. I can't believe that peace officer would be such a dinkus about it. Shouldn't he know that if you're a student, the bus pass is included?

I am a full-time UofC student, I had produced my student ID with the proper sticker on it (expiry date visible and everything) but the sticker was peeled off around the edges. Based on that, the officer accused me of stealing someone else's sticker and putting it on my ID! (yea, I don't even want to get started on how frustrated I felt). Anyway he wouldnt believe that it is in fact my sticker and issued me a violation ticket (summon + $150 in fine). I am not going to pay a penny of this fine.
Of course I have proof that I am a full time student and the campus ticket center also keeps records of the sticker numbers, who it was issued to and when. They said that if the transit were to call them they would give out all the information.
I have written to the calgary transit about this issue and waiting on their answers. But of course now I have to fight the ticket. but as these things often happen at the worse possible time, my summon date is when I am scheduled to be out of country for research purposes.
So my question is, does anyone know if I can go to the Justice of Peace downtown with all the proof I have and get the ticket thrown out? Or do I HAVE to go through the process of setting trial date + waste more time?
|
With speeding tickets you have a few options I assume the same for transit tickets
You can plead not-guilty by mail and they can set the date
You can go in advance and talk to a JP and negotiate / get it tossed or if thye won't toss it plead not-guilty and they will give you a trial date.

I have nothing productive to say to someone who rides the CTrain without paying.

Thanks for the response!
I am not negotiating anything. If they throw out the ticket then good, else I am taking it to court.
There is no way I am paying a penny when I produced a valid fare.
For anyone who ever requires this again, all the new UPass stickers have a serial number, that Calgary Transit can track down and can look up who issued the sticker, when, and to whom. They have no right to harass you as long as the expiry date and the serial number is clearly legible on the sticker.
And if I can, I am going to get the officer reprimanded for harassing me without reasonable grounds.
