Is it even a problem? Is this an epidemic or something? What made you post this today?
The point is I study these trends and understand these theories.
If I was uneducated 100 years ago, I would agree with you but neither are true as my area of study is this field.
And I was never advocating 20 year olds sleeping with 15 year olds, I have been commenting on how I believe the laws in these particular states are reprissive and potentially harmful in the wrong circumstances.

I disagree with the laws in the states which I posted, I agree with the Canadian legal system and believe it's take well measured objective steps, and there are many options to protect our kids. I believe the actions in these states are beyond unnecessary.
But you think making sex with underage kids illegal is a poor choice to protect those kids? What options would you then prefer?

You are saying that kids are old enough by 16 to make these choices by themselves, but not face the consequences for doing something that is illegal?

Personally I believe the system we have in Canada is a great one, it may not be completely ideal but it's a much better alternative then seeing an innocent kid get convicted as a sex offender for the rest of his life because he and his same age girlfriend had consesual sex.

Well he was bound to be had.. bastad! I think him landing an 18 year old (one that looks hardly 18 years old) is the best of all possible situations..

You cited Canadian laws with a 5 year window, which is absurd IMO.

The fact that you (and millions of other people) refer to sex as 'hooking up' these days is a big part of the problem, especially when talking about minors. Sex is a grown up activity with grown up consequences.

If, at 17, I thought my girlfriends parents would have me charged with a crime I would keep it in my pants. I realize there are a lot of guys your age who simply can't do that
.
That's great, but it demonstrates how woefully out of touch with reality you apparently are.

I'm getting a kick out of the parents who actually believe they have authority on who their kids willfully choose to sleep with and when they have sex.

Why, because I don't use the lingo of the day? My days of 'hooking up' are long past. Thankfully.

That said, you don't see the lack of importance attached to that kind of term?

Nope. Not what I said at all.

I wasn't referring to you. I do agree with the OP that the laws are a tad archaic, but it's not like they're heavily enforced.

It has nothing to do with the lingo, it has to do with the realities of how sex is viewed by people in the age group impacted by statutory rape laws. You have a great viewpoint as a parent it seems, but a pretty unrealistic one from that of the teenagers in question.

Actually they are pretty heavily enforced, it's not at all uncommon to hear of 19 year olds facing criminal charges and sex offender registration because they spelt with their 17 year old girlfriends. I know of a case in which the DA aggressively pursued charges a couple of years ago based on scenario similar to that which occurred in the 80's.

Which was the point of my sarcastic first post. This is not something that is producing widespread convictions.

Unfortunately, the OP feels like this is equivalent to the death penalty. He never did answer Rogue Underoos' question, one that was aksed twice.

Heavily enforced? Do you know how many times a day each of those laws is broken?

They're not heavily enforced in any way.
