I would love to see the home button killed off in favor of this. That or illuminate it some way for iPad 2. For whatever reason it really annoys me when I can't find it in the dark.

That's what she said! (Oh man, I'm on fire today!)
I'm all for dumping the home button. I've had two phones replaced because of worn out home buttons, and the whole double-tap thing gets in the way of me really making use of task-switching. It always just goes back to the home screen or flips over to Spotlight or whatever.
More good news. 4.3 gives you the option to change the mute switch back to it's original orientation lock function.
I'm starting to think that I'm the only person in the world that prefers it be a mute button. I guess those of us who like it as a mute button and those of us who are strange can finally co-exist.

Orientation switch for the win! even downloaded a damn jailbreak app to restore that functionality.
Damn I can't wait for those gestures!!! Is that video using 3 or 4 fingers?
It's unclear if the gestures are going to make it into 4.3. Some people are speculating, based on the developer notes for the beta, that Apple is giving developers a preview of something in the pipeline, not of something that's definitely scheduled for inclusion in 4.3. I think the concern is that co-opting the gestures for system use may break a number of apps.
If they aren't somewhat imminent, I almost wish I'd never seen the demos online.
Why does my mute button not mute anything? I brings up the mute icon, but nothing else.
Because the "mute" button was a poorly thought out and implemented design choice. It was Steve-O's attempt to make the iPad controls functionally the same as the iPhone. One of the few missteps in the evolution of the iOS.

That means nothing for developers except for a preparation to kick you in the nuts if you're already using a 4-5 finger multitouch. I had an idea about using an expose like gesture, but that wouldn't work if there is a global gesture for bringing up multitasking or bringing you to the home page.
If it's in the beta, it's likely to be in production release of 4.3. They rarely take out major feature sets like that after deciding to release it to beta.

I have used the developers version of 4.3, and the gestures are in there. Not saying they can't take them out, but they are there for now.
The four finger swipes to go back and forth between programs are a really good implementation of multi-tasking.
