I'm thinking of buying a ps3 and I'm wondering if the 160gb is the way to go for me. I'd probably play the snes and genesis games more than ps3 games.
I'd use it mainly for a blu ray player. I'm not very good with computers so I don't think I'd do much downloading. I doubt i'd use it to store pics at all.
What's the advantage to having the 250 or 320gb ps3?
I'm a noob! What the hell can I do with this machine people!!!???

Honestly, I wouldn't buy it just for the newfound security flaw that allows the homebrew programs. Despite the claims of the team that found the exploit, Sony *might* be able to come up with a fix for it. At the very least they might be able to make it very difficult to do. Once you get into the jailbreaking scene it can become a cat and mouse game. I know others in this thread have stated how easy it is to do. But if you don't know much about the basics of computing, even something as "easy" as putting snes and genesis games on it can be a daunting task. Not to mention keeping up with all the custom firmware updates that counter Sony's inevitable attempts to close the security hole.
If you want a machine that is a good Blu-Ray player and a good game machine then go for it. Just don't buy it for unauthorized functions that might not be permanent, or might be beyond your ability to open up.
If you will not be putting any media on the PS3 (pictures, music, downloaded movies) Then the 160GB model will be more than enough for your needs.

There are much cheaper ways to play SNES and Genesis games than a PS3! Seriously.

Love the emulators! But one thing...
With the Genesis, Mednafen and the NES one, they show up in the Games folder as "Parental Control Restricted Content" and i have to enter the default password. As far as I can see, i have no restrictions on content at all under settings. The SNES one works fine (although only one of my ROMS seems to show up; I'll play with that later).
Not a huge deal, but I cannot tell the folders apart initially as they all say the same thing.

Guys who found the PS3 key are now being sued, accused of circumventing technological protection measures and other unlawful acts.

Not surprising at all... Sony is trying to show the shareholders they are doing something to protect their IP. Sadly I find this ironic that a company that fought tooth and nail for fair use during the betamax days is now fighting against it.
And its not like suing geohots going to make a difference anyways, information is out and there are more hackers than ever working on this thing. Its not like you can sue the internet to remove information from it.

The original X-Box was an incredible device when hacked. The internal hard drive made it the first console that was actually useful to jailbreak. The Dreamcast was the first system I played emulators on, but you had to burn loaders, emulators and roms onto discs. No hard drive and 24 megs of Ram limited what you could do.
The X-Box was quite the revelation in the day. I had a web browser, Linux, emulators, ftp programs etc. The crown jewel in any Xbox owners' collection was the XBMC (X-Box Media Center). You could stream audio, video, pictures all from your PC. It played tons of different formats. If I remember correctly you could even grab the local weather and play the shows saved on your PC Windows Media Center. The only reason I retired it is because it choked on HD files because of hardware limitations. It did things that even modern devices don't do.
It's too bad that the developers of XBMC have stated that they have no plans to port it to the PS3.

Bootdisk with the rotating 3d reindeer ftw hahaha.
Picked mine up in the early days of internet shopping for about 15 bucks. This was back in the day when you had to sign up for porn spam emails from a geocities website to find a password for a hotline server...
Best entertainment bang for the buck I've ever come accross. MVC2, ZG2, and Mr Freaking Driller to name a few.

Agreed 110%. I actually bought my Xbox 1 AFTER I had owned an Xbox 360 for two years. Had it modded by a guy up in Coventry Hills, it was quite a useful device.

I bought an Xbox specifically for the Xbox Media Centre. To this day, I have never played a game on that Xbox. I think it came with a game, but it remains unopened in it's shrink wrap. XMC was pretty sweet for an anime junkie like me. It played everything, and was easy to update.
I've also semi retired it for the same reason you did in that it can't HD files, but I still have it connected to an old tv in my house in case I wanted to access normal SD stuff off my computer.

are you guys saying I can make my original xbox a media server to play sd stuff and dvds? Will it pull everything easily like ps3 media server does? I gave it to my brother but he just got a 360 so this could make every room in my house media server accessable. Will be out of place a little bit from my 3 ps3's and 360 but it will do the trick.

Yup, it acts exactly like a media server. Although, with how cheap media players are nowadays, I'm not sure if it's worth it to go through the hassle of modding the thing. I have no experience at all modding it. I had a friend soft mod it for me. He had to buy a specific game and use some kind of exploit to do it.

Couple that with my memories of systems like starforce and I'm pretty skeptical.
