No, you can transfer them directly to your iPad's hard drive.

Right in iTunes under the App Window of the iPad is a place to upload files to apps that support it. VLC is one of them. You drag your movie file into it and when you open VLC on your iPad it has whatever you added.

While possible I still don't see it happening. I would think that the more likely scenario is that the price point absolutely had to be below $500. In order for them to make whatever amount it was they wanted off each unit, I imagine they had to keep the production cost to a certain number. Assuming it had a camera in the planning stage when it comes to what you'd take off an iPad to get cost down I can't think of anything else that could go.

Kind of an odd story as to why it was taken off (a complaint from a Nokia employee):http://www.cultofmac.com/vlc-app-pul...-crusade/76340

But at least it looks like there are other options on the app store (oPlayer): http://www.cultofmac.com/oplayer-for...-formats/55499

Writing with considerable smugness, Denis-Courmont writes:

“At last, Apple has removed VLC media player from its application store. Thus the incompatibility between the GNU General Public License and the AppStore terms of use is resolved – the hard way. This end should not have come to a surprise to anyone, given the precedents.”

He’s right, of course, but he’s also mistaking the letter of the GPL for the spirit of the GPL, all as part of what appears to be some sort of knee-jerk anti-Apple crusade. That he works for Nokia makes this all just more suspect.
Wow... and people call Apple users d-bags.

I believe it started as a book by the same title that examined the lifestyle of really strange mac users and just became a branching off point for a website with news. Now the title works as a kind of humorous poke at itself.

I highly recommend finding and watching the documentary MacHEADs. That will show you the odd, alarming, and downright scary Mac contingent. It has everything from sex addicts to people living in school buses.

You know I have to say that after 2 weeks of use I absolutely love this thing. I use it everyday, mostly when I come home from work but also in meetings. Best $500 I ever spent.

Also, a shoutout to ChaptersIndigo... Kobo has one of the best apps available IMO. It's really a great example of what an iPad app should be. Nice to see a Canadian company doing well.

My poor laptop is probably feeling abandoned...

Yeah. It's quite the device. Over time you'll start using it more and more daily till it becomes essential in your daily flow!

The only thing that has cut back my usage on it (and significantly so) is the Macbook Air.

I have only used my iPad as an ebook reader since that. I'll prolly sell it and pick up an iPad 2 at launch, or try life with a Kindle full time hehe.

It's not good to cover your Apple TV in baby oil.

The new gestures coming in iOS 4.3 look like they will really elevate the iPad to a whole new level. This looks superb:

This beta release contains a preview of new Multi-Touch gestures for iPad. You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. We are providing this preview before releasing them to the public to understand how these gestures work with your apps.
