In all seriousness though, reading the review for her book, I don't see how her methods worked out that well. I mean, her second daughter quit violin and started playing tennis. Shouldn't she frown upon that since she didn't care about drama and Phys ed? Of course, if her daughter excels in it, then this broad will still claim credit, even if what she did was clearly counter productive to it.

Robots come from China... not actual robots. The kinds that look like people but have 0 personality and only know how to do work.

Im generalizing but you get what im saying.

I think a lot of parallels could be drawn between the stereotypical Chinese mothers depicted in the article and the stereotypical hockey parent

It doesn't work.

Mrs. Francis tried that at an early age with poor Eric. He couldn't hack it so she had to force him in to the Calgary Sun.

It is the child's level of happiness that measures how "superior" their mother/father are.

Some of these chinese over-achievers don't look happy to me.

I know I would not have enjoyed such a structured life when I was a kid....

But how much plastic surgery did you have to have when you were 18?

Koreans are some of vainest people I've meet.

Then why does my Chinese colleague call them the Calgary Frames?

Vainest meaning superficial about appearance? If so, I do agree with you....

Wait a minute. So you're bragging about being rich in this thread, but complaining about park and ride fees being axed at a bad time for you in another thread?

Sense of entitlement, on that poster, it's massive.

Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

Can a regimen of no playdates, no TV, no computer games and hours of music practice create happy kids? And what happens when they fight back?

A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to do:

• attend a sleepover
• have a playdate
• be in a school play
• complain about not being in a school play
• watch TV or play computer games
• choose their own extracurricular activities
• get any grade less than an A
• not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama
• play any instrument other than the piano or violin
• not play the piano or violin.
• brush your teeth and have fresh breath
• drive

I'm using the term "Chinese mother" loosely. I know some Korean, Indian, Jamaican, Irish and Ghanaian parents who qualify too. Conversely, I know some mothers of Chinese heritage, almost always born in the West, who are not Chinese mothers, by choice or otherwise. I'm also using the term "Western parents" loosely. Western parents come in all varieties.

All the same, even when Western parents think they're being strict, they usually don't come close to being Chinese mothers. For example, my Western friends who consider themselves strict make their children practice their instruments 30 minutes every day. An hour at most. For a Chinese mother, the first hour is the easy part. It's hours two and three that get tough.

....
While we're stereotyping - fixed.
