what surprises me is how rarely they check for c-train tickets. and when I say rarely I mean never. I ride it twice a day every day and have never seen someone checking for tickets, if they marginally increased the effort in checking people I bet the cars in the parking lots would show up less often.

Not sure what you mean by the bolded, but substantially increased fare enforcement patrols would cost more than the fares recouped in doing so.

I mean I have a feeling a large portion of people don't pay for tickets every single day. If I didn't have a pass from the university I wouldn't either, cheaper to just risk it and pay the fine. If people started fearing getting caught the revenue from people paying for tickets would go up substantially or they'd stop riding altogether. I ride on what must be the busiest trains of the day and there has never been one person checking for tickets, even standing on the platform or something checking wouldn't cost that much. pay someone 20$/hour to stand there and check and you'd definitely get that money back in return. just put them at the 3 or 4 busiest platforms around the city.

I believe the Park N' Ride will still remain at stations.
I think the fees for using the Park N' Ride may be discontinued in April.

all you need are turnstiles at the doors, i'm not sure why the city hasn't figured that out yet

So it's not enough they're getting rid of it, it still bothers you because it isn't done to meet your specific needs?

The bolded are subjective and need to be quantified and weighed against each other. This has not been done for Calgary Transit (at least publically), but has been done for similar systems and the answer usually comes back that the costs of doing things like having station attendants is more expensive than the fares they would recoup. Not only that, but it creates a problem where people who live nearby station X that does not get attendants will want the same service that station Y gets.

Only 10-15% of LRT riders access the system by Park and Ride, and 50%+ access it by feeder bus, while the rest either walk, cycle, or are dropped off. That is, 50% are already paying fares or showing passes before they even get to the LRT. Not sure what percentage of the other half will consistenly evade fares, but my guess is it isn't all that high. Probably 10% at most.

Impossible to implement at almost every station in the system without near-complete overhauls or retrofitting of their layout and design.

That's beside the fact that it isn't worth it anyway. Fare evasion still occurs on systems that have turnstiles, and the fares that would be recouped would not cover the cost of installing and running them.

obviously it's subjective, I'm not a public transit worker or a city official, are you? quantify the statistics of how many people would pay for tickets.... get a grip. This isn't city council, it's an internet forum.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. I didn't mean you specifically have to quantify those figures. I meant that they would have to be quantified by someone before a definitive answer could be reached, at least publically. I'd imagine the numbers have already been crunched internally, and looking at other cities, it wouldn't be worth it to increase enforcement beyond a certain point in the name of recouping fares lost to fare evasion.

No, I'm not a public transit worker or city official.

I guess the point is- how do they know what the payment rate is if they almost never check C-Train customers for tickets.

The last time I was checked for my ticket was 1993.

If I had my way we'd have a branding system in place so every sap living in DeWinton, Okotoks, or Airdire that uses our infrastructure would have to pay a $5 daily city entrance fee. Maybe even $6 for DeWinton scabs

I doubt that they're picking on university students. You seem mad.....

It's probably due to the fact that the new council which voted on this just got in office late October and these things takes a few months to implement. Actually 6 months is really quick considering when you're dealing with city politics. You should be estatic it's this quick.

Yeah students sure get screwed over...having to pay less than a monthly pass for a whole semester of transit use.

Its a conspiracy. They're all out to get you.

Besides, whats the big deal, just drive that sweet Mustang all the way to the University, a few more bucks here and there for parking and gas, no sweat off your back.
