Changes begin in Calgary
New Flames GM Cheese started the first of many changes in Flamesland tonite.
Flyers GM Da_Chief called me up and within 5 minutes we made our deal.
Leaving Calgary for Philadelphia is:
Coming to Calgary from Philadelphia is:
Wideman, Dennis (D) NHL 70OV
Clemmensen, Scott (G) NHL 75OV
Thomas, Timothy Jr. (G) NHL 80OV
and Philadelphia Flyers sends Calgary Flames $3.49 million for the 2010-11 season

I'd been after Ward for sometime, wasn't able to obtain him from Mike but it was a different idea with him (more futures).
Like Cheese said it took minutes to get this done...sucks losing Wideman but I've got 5 top 4 dman already and Eaton is decent at number 6. I will potentially look at upgrading him with the cheese I created.
Thanks Mold

Interesting deal. I like it more for Philly cause they get a starting goalie 9 years younger then what they gave up. That being said I think Cheese wants the playoffs and he adds a veteran goalie who is leading the NHL in pretty well all goaltending stats and a #1 defenseman in Wideman so the deal is pretty solid for him as well and I think it makes the Flames a better on ice product.
Hopefully Ward sucks in net for Philly and they drop down past the Pens in the standings.

Not really, I like what I got in Ward so didn't bother shopping Wideman and Timmy.

I didn't think you were asking him either, Flyers GM is so vain he thought your post was about him.

Well to be honest I did get a few others yesterday. This deal made the Flames better at 2 positions, defence and backup goalie, and based on Thomas's play in the NHL this year I don't think Ill lose a lot if any on re rates next year.
Nothing else I was offered made me a better team.
I still have many trade-able assets I am willing to discuss.

Overall I like what Philly got more as I think they came away with the more valuable player in Ward.
HOWEVER, the Flames get better ASAP and Cheese is not a guy who wants to wait around for assets to reach their potential. He is a WIN NOW kind of guy and he improves his team right now which is his goal.
Overall good deal. Philly is the one taking the gamble here hoping Ward plays as well as Thomas. I don't think he will!

When GM Penney makes deals he always thinks about next season. There is no way we would have signed Gomez as a UFA. That was enough for us to make this deal.

Doan did pretty good for us when he first came in but has slumped a bit of late.
Havlat gives us a decent replacment and we pick up a younger player and some Picks to build with.
