Default Very interesting Brodie article

http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...240/story.html

Quote:
"I've talked to T.J. about this," acting general manager Jay Feaster said last weekend after Brodie sat out. "He's a young player, and it's going to take a little time for him to respect the American Hockey League."

Respect the American Hockey League?

"I think because of the taste he had at the NHL level - the success at the NHL level - I think he went into Abbotsford with a total lack of respect for the quality of play."

[...]

"Those of us who have spent a career in the minor league know the quality of play in the American League," Feaster said. "That was one of the things we discussed with T.J. when he was sent down. 'Don't assume because you're the last one sent down, that you're the next one up.'
Very interesting that Feaster said this, but this is what I meant in a previous post when I suspected that Brodie's ego may have been getting to him and it reflected his gameplay.

What makes me a little uneasy though is what Playfair said in the article how he wants Brodie to develop his defensive game more. I just hope it doesn't stifle his offensive side:

Quote:
"T.J. came down here and he was in a rush to get back to the NHL," Playfair said. "He was playing a little bit out of control, and we're trying to get the base of his play back in order. [...] My biggest thing with T.J. is that I'm mandating he become a better defender."

"Obviously now, my main focus is staying back and playing more of a defensive role," Brodie said. "Leave it more to the forwards to create the offence.

"I just got away from the defensive side and tried to do too much offensively."

"My game has always been offensive. Skating. Joining the rush. But there's a time to do it and a time not to. Sometimes, it's better to just take a couple strides and get rid of the puck. Let the forwards do their jobs."

Giordano was much the same. He learned and I guess is now the better for it but I sometimes miss his offensive forays when he'd be the first in on a dump in.

This is good IMO.

If Brodie wants to become an effective NHL defenseman, he has to learn to reign it in a bit. Be strong defensively first, and pick your shots to go on offense at the right times.

Man I hope this kid keeps developing.

Has so much potential.

"It's like Paul Coffey in the beginning," Playfair said. "He was very, very committed to playing offence. But as he became an even better defender, he became one of the top, top, top defencemen in the game.
"When T.J. becomes a better defender, his offence will become that much more valuable."

If Brodie gets even half as good as Coffey I will be very happy.

If Brodie gets even 1/8 as good as Coffey I will be freaking ecstatic.

I remember Gio's first game against the Nucks. He was in forechecking , I was thinking what the heck is this guy doing.

I'd love to see Brodie turn into a second Giordano. It'd be so amazing.

Brodie just needs to learn balance. This is all normal development IMO and I agree that he will be better for it.

I am super bullish on him and I think he could someday be a 30-40 point guy.

At the same time, if he wants to believe his own hype and stifle his career than I won't lose sleep over it. We'll be drafting superstar players soon enough.

I'd sooner him turn into a roamer. It's something we don't have, but many other NHL teams benefit from them.

Green, Byfuglien, Letang.

Model his development after these guys. Push the tempo, push the puck, go go go go.

Absolutely preach defensive awareness to T.J., but it should be secondary. There's room in the modern day NHL for roamers, and T.J. seems to be capable of developing into one.

I disagree. He's a defense man so it should be primary. If he wants to have any hope of being > 5th nhl defense man, he better be good at defense. Besides, if he's good at defense, he'll be able to use his roaming abilities better as if you don't have the puck, it's pretty hard to move it forwards.

Absolutely not.

I would much rather have him developed to be a good defender in all areas of the game. He is a defenceman first, so if he wants to be an NHLer he needs to respect that as his #1 priority. A lot like a Lidstrom, Giordano mould where you trust the offense to come instead of force it.

I would hate a Mike Green on this team, a no offense, liability on the back end who causes as many goals as he scores. And what happens when his offense dries up, like it has this year? Then you just have a crappy defense man.

I'm hoping Brodie can become our Kris Letang. Alot of similarities between the two.

One thing that Dion has not learned yet, hopefully Brodie gets it.

Theo Fleury got sent down after helping to win the Stanley Cup. Being sent down doesn't mean much. You'll get your call up.
