I can see what that exchange was like

Siren wailing

Speeder - "Dang Nabiit Bippity Boppity Boo"

Cop walks up to the car

Cop - "Good evening sir, do you know why you were pulled over"

Speeder - "No idea"

Cop - "Well the posted speed limit was 60 and you were going 77"

Speeder - "I have a perfectly good reason why you shouldn't give me a ticket"

Cop - "You're having a heart attack and speeding to the hospital"

Speeder - "No"

Cop - "Your wife's water broke and you were rushing her to the hospital but you forgot her at home which explains the empty car so you were rushing back to pick her up"

Speeder - "No"

Cop - "Hmmm you don't have a Bell PVR and you were rushing home to watch the game, that's going to cost you"

Speeder - "No"

Cop - "Then what's your reason for speeding"

Speeder - "Well I was super reving my engine so I could dump it into 5th gear at 60 KM's an hour to save gas"

Cop - "Here's your ticket"

I've heard some great excuses for speeding over the years but revving your engine up to 5th gear for fuel efficiency takes the cake.

In general, people are fantastically talented at convincing themselves their actions were justified.

screw 80% of the comments here. you don't want demerits compared to paying cash.

Call POINTTS traffic agency and ask for Charlie, he will get your points taken off for about the same cost as your ticket. Free consultation

It's an 06 pontiac pursuit

60 to 77 in 2 seconds flat!!!!

So...why couldn't you push in your clutch, rev the engine and then throw it into fifth with the high RPMs?

I don't think I would have bought your story either. Unless it's a real emergency, you are likely going to get a ticket. Especially if you are 17 over...going up a hill...

Isn't lugging supposed to be hard on the pistons and main bearings?

If you were speeding up a hill wouldn't your engine already be revving higher and therefore you should have been able to shift at a speed lower than 70? Assuming that your saying you normally shift into 5th at 70 on the flats.

Unless you're in a semi, I can't imagine why you'd want to be in 5th going up a hill in a 60kph zone. Most (4 wheeled) passenger vehicles would rather climb that hill in third or maybe fourth. Fifth? At 77kph? Uphill? to save gas? Dude, you're doing it wrong.

FTR, I know the exact place you're talking about, and I've seen cops there dozens of times over the years. Quite the little fishing hole they've got there, but it doesn't matter; if you're going 77 in a 60, you're going to get a ticket. All the fuel economy explanations in the world wont get you out of that one, otherwise I'd be able to do 90 everywhere in the city and claim that it's "the most fuel economic speed" to go.

You sure it wasn't from the roar of your engine as you get it up to PEAK speed for that big shift into fifth?

Theres those spots in this city you just know to slow down. Its a coin flip as to whether cops will be present or not.
Try for a reduction but more importantly add this spot to your slow down zone.

I always watch my speed going up that hill. I've see police parked in that entrance to the trailer park a bunch of times and for whatever reason people like to boot it up hills.

I would very much think so. Lots of clutch rubbing, bearing wear. The biggest thing I got out of this thread is I feel sorry for the car!

Sorry, but the story doesn't wash. You were accelerating get into 5th and then you were going to slow down, in 5th, to the speed limit to chug the rest of the way up the hill? And you expected the cop to go easy on you based on this?

I'm genuinely not trying to sound condescending, and I realize that the first ticket is always the hardest to swallow, but just pay it and get it off of your mind. They get easier over time. I have had 4 or 5 in my 15 or so years of driving, and while it sucks to part with the cash, each time I knew exactly what I was doing and didn't feel compelled to blame it on the topography, my car, the time of day, or the weather. Sometimes you gamble and lose.

I don't understand why you'd want to be in 5th to climb a hill at cruising speed ... when I am going up a hill I want to be in a lower gear.
